223 Rem Cannelured bullets ??

For semiautos like the Mini-14, is factory ammo without cannelured bullets OK? (Such as 55gr Win USA FMJ without cannelures.) What about handloading - use only cannelured bullets? Thanks.

I load both cannelured and non-cannelured for autoloaders (mini-14, AR, Rem 7400) and have not experienced any problems with bullet set back. Case neck tension, with my dies anyway, is adequate to hold the bullet in position. For a little extra insurance, you may want to try a Lee "factory crimp" collet type crimping die, these will create their own cannelure.

As far as factory loads go, chamber one first by hand, then by rifle mechanism (firing) and measure overall length. No change in OAL should mean no problem. Come to think of it, none of my rifles, centerfire anyway, have ever fired a factory load, but I would be suprised if they presented a problem.

My experiences match Kerth's exactly. Not one problem with any bullet in the mini 14. I did think however that the factory FMJ 223 bullets I've seen have cannelures. I could be wrong, the only factory stuff I've fired lately has been the cheap stuff from Wolf.

I have never had any problems with noncannelured bullets in any of the many 223 rifles that I have owned. That includes Mini-14's and AR-15s. Best. Watch-Six
