.223 plinking ammo

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions some inexpensive .223 rounds that are reliable and won't ruin my rifle. I am using an M&P15. I have heard both good and bad things about brands such as wolf, brown bear, and silver bear. All seem to be relatively cheap but I don't want to ruin my rifle. Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just shoot whatever cheap stuff you want. Some of it might choke your rifle but none of will hurt it. You just have to find the one your rifle likes the best

Your MP is chrome lined... shoot all the steel cases you want. The one thing I will caution is the Wolf and other stuff that is lacquered up.... clean it right after using, other your rifle will gum up.

I broke my new AR in with 1000 rounds of steel cased Tul stuff. You might experience some FTF's but other than that it was a non issue. Mostly I shoot American Eagle or Lake City Brass... and reload and buy more. Generally I will shoot 1000 rounds of factory... replace buy another 1000 factory loads, and reload those original 1000 brass with a buddy's press.

My rifle never skips a beat with steel or brass cased ammo, I like to stick with brass... just to keep a stock pile of cheap reloaded ammo.

cerebral aSSassin; you could hurt it with steel cased or steel laquer coated.

the expansion of the steel isnt good for your chamber, that why a lot of people prefer to shoot brass cased.

im sure one of these fine fellows that knows more about it could elaborate for us.

The Russians have been shooting steel cased ammo for years.
How do they do it?
Do you think they make better steel barrels than we do?
I doubt it!
The only thing you need to stay away from is the old lacquer coated steel cased ammo because some guns will get build up in the chamber from the lacquer melting off.
Most of the newer steel cased ammo is Polymer coated it doesn't melt off like the old lacquer cases.
Here is what I shoot, I have not had any misfires or any other problems it is good clean shooting stuff.

I like PMC bronze. Also BVAC makes some good stuff. Check on Cheaper Than Dirt. Buy the cheapest brass ammo you can find.

I shot a lot of it in an old SKS. I just used fingernail polish remover on a chamber brush to remove it, then cleaned it like nomral.

if your shootin 7.62x39 out of an ak, have at the steel cased stuff, i do. but not out of my $1100 ar .

What $1100 AR do you have that isn't chrome lined? Sounds like you got a pretty bad deal my friend.

My AR cost over $1500 & I have no problem shooting steel case ammo through it.
What does the price have to do with the guns ability to handle steel cased ammo?

And don't be put off by the term 'steel cased'. It's actually quite soft, enough that I hardly notice the occasional one that sneaks through when I reload.

agreed, but I think he's saying he wouldn't chance it with his investment which I also agree with. I would shoot PMC and spend a little bit more doing so. The PMC hardball is also on hand for my .45s as bulk defensive ammo as is the .223 fmj. In a pinch it wouldn't exactly be like you were throwing stones.

Chrome lining is nice, but even makers like Rock River Arms doesnt do it unless you want it, and pay 30.00 more when you order it. They will tell you
they prefer not to chrome target barrels, as they are slightly less accurate
than the non chrome.
Most sporting rifles don't have it to this day, and U.S. Military rifles didnt have it till the M16E1....in response to the corrosion problems of south east asia(and lack of proper cleaning kits at first)
So its really not an issue one way or another unless you plan to neglect your rifle in a tropical inviroment...otherwise its a preference. Now rifles that shoot
corrosive commie ammo...same thing, if you clean it properly it will never see a pit, frost, dark bore ect...neglect it and it will grow hair lol.
Steel cases are not an issue that calls for chrome to counteract...there were U.S. issue steel cased .30 carbine and .45acp in WW2 for example.

I'm a fan of silver bear 62gr HP. It is a consistent 3 moa at 100 yards out of all 4 of my AR's. It's 100% reliable in my chrome lined, non chrome lined and SS barrels.

Not a bad deal if it's a bull barrel target/varmint rifle. Most of those aren't chromed since they are more accurate without chrome lining.

I agree.
Been about 1,100-1,200 rounds of Wolf thru my M4 w/ no problems. This in addition to the good stuff that gets shot as well. No special loyalties towards Wolf, other than the price is always right.

The key though, as mentioned, is to keep the weapon clean & wet. The M4 will run great as long as the right parts are cleaned & oiled properly.
