.223 bullet recommend for hogs.

So I'm thinking about trying my 20" 1:8 twist AR .223/556 on some hogs. I have an AR 10 which works but I just wanted to try something new...

Anyone have a "go to" pig bullet in .224? Also what distance do you have a reasonable expectation for success?

Because using my .308 or my longer range .300 win mag I aim for the traditional kill zone.

Depends on how well you aim, shot placement...
I use 65 grain Hornady A-max twice a year, since it works when you aim, never needed anything different.

Highly accurate and shot placement is king, in about 10 years I've only had one get away...

I've had good luck with Sierra 65 gr. SBT GameKing. Most of the hogs I've shot with them have been head/neck shots so they drop, DRT (which doesn't mean much). But on deer with body shots, I've found that they expand & hold together & retain weight as best you can expect from a 65gr .224 bullet. Don't expect a lot of pass-through's on anything over 80lbs. Bleeding from 2 holes helps tracking, especially with a small caliber & thick hide/fat layer.

FWIW...

For hogs and the .224 diameter limitation you have set, I'd have to go with a premium bonded bullet or a monolithic bullet. I'd also use the heaviest and longest bullet your rifle will stabilize and shoot accurately. Examples: Swift Scirocco, Nosler Partition or E-Tip, Hornady GMX, Barnes TTSX.

We take hogs all the time with Nosler Partition. Very similar point of impact to 55gr federal bulk ammo which was the big selling point for me.

Thanks for all the information guys.

. My rifle has a 1:8 twist and 20" barrel so I can stabilize all but the very heaviest bullets, like up to 85 grains.

The Barnes bullets intrigues me, mainly because I have been a nosler man for hunting since I started reloading. I love the nosler Accubonds which are essentially modern versions of the partition.i have used Sierra game kings as well and I took a white tail last year using hornady sst's in .270 win. But I have never heard a bad word said about Barnes bullets. So it may be fun to try a new maker..... after all, 25% of the fun is hunting and 75% of the fun is load development for hunting lol.

One concern I have though....will the barns 70 grain Triple shock fit in a magazine? They are looooooong bullets. Kind of like the Swift scirocco

Bullet Weight: 70 gr Case Trim Length: 1.750 " S.D. 0.199
Bullet Style: TAC-X Primer: Federal 205 B.C. 0.314
COAL: 2.250 " Barrel Length: 20 "
Case: LC Twist Rate: 1:7 "
Note the COL 2.25 is normal length, and will fit your magazine. A lot of the bullet is seated into the brass. They say 3000 fps with TAC. I have shot them in a 1:9 bolt gun with fine accuracy.

Hunting out of Falfurrias, TX I shot a 246 pound boar at 110 yards using a 55 grain bulk JSP bullet over 24.3 grains of H335 . I was shooting my Bushmaster XM15E2A3. I shot the boar in the head just in back of the ear . That's the same cartridge I use to shoot all of my hogs . I shot q 100 pounder at 200 yards using the same rig and it seems to do the trick .
