.223 ammo questions

Question #1:

I dimly recall buying some ammo from cheaperthandirt.com for my AR. This was a few months ago. I have recently unearthed it down in the basement, and I have no idea what variety it is. ( shoulda written down the specs). It is in a sealed OD green battle pack of 300 rounds and is marked as follows:

5,56x45
Ball M1A4
CTN

I think, for some reason, this is the South African version of M193, but I'm not really sure. Is this correct?

Question #2:

My AR has a 16" barrel. Would I be reading the FAQs correctly when I state that, in general, the best stuff to feed it would be M193 or the civvie equivalent (which would be 55gr)?

Thanks,

Mike

Coronach: That is indeed the South African surplus .223 --- very accurate and reliable stuff. As for the best grain bullet to shoot in your AR, it depends (I believe) on the rate of twist of your barrel. Mine was 1:9 and 55-grain shot great in it. I believe that the faster 1:7 barrels need a heavier bullet. AFAIK

OK, cool

Thats what I thought. I have a 1-9" twist, so that should be good to go. Last question: does SA military differ from South African PMP? Cheaperthandirt doesn't have the battlepacks on sale (or at least, not advertised if they do), but they do have 20 rnd boxes of SA PMP. Is this essentially the same-manufacturer/same-stuff?

Mike

As I understand it, PMP makes both the commercial and the military South African ammo. As AR-10 states, the surplus has more flash but is equally reliable. I like the battle packs for long-term storage but either ammo should work great for you.
