question 22wrf ammo is *supposedly*like 22 mag*shorts*,iwas told meaning one could use them in 22 mag chambered guns.however i find that they will load in one of my revolvers[heritage arms]the shells only go2/3rds of the way into the chambers of my NAA Pug,also noticed on the box of{CCI WRF]shells a warning;"not recomended for use in revolvers".any ideas/answers?and no i haven't tried actually firing out of the revolver yet.thanks in advance.

Interesting question so I looked this round up. In the useful book "Cartridges of the World" by Barnes the author lists the 22 WRF as an obsolete round. He says no one has made a rifle for this round in many decades and the last batch of ammo made for this round was back in 95 by Winchester. Maybe another batch was made after that though. You say you have a batch from CCI so that is interesting. Maybe CAS shooting has revived it some.

The 22 WRF is about identical to the .22 Remington Special which is also obsolete.

The WRF was first introduced for the Winchester 1890 pump action rifle and Colt chambered it in a revolver.

The bullet is a flat base inside lubricated bullet rather than the outside lube of the 22 short, 22 long or the common 22lr that we are used to. This means that the outside dimensions of the case are larger than the 22 lr so it will not chamber in a gun made for 22 lr. The latter though will chamber in a gun for the 22 WRF but the cases will likely split and you may find problems in reliability.

Now the dimensions of the case and bullet are similar but not identical to the 22 WMR which is longer than the WRF. The 22 WRF is a shorter and less powerful version of the 22 WMR and so the WRF will chamber in a gun made for the WMR.

Interesting that the box has a warning. CCI likely loaded this with the rifle in mind and put the warning on because most of the handguns made expressly for the WRF will be old and may not be in good shape.

Barnes list the neck and base dia.s of the WRF (.242-.243) as being a bit more than the WMR (.240-.241) that may account for the sticky loading that you report.

Hope that helps some.

Most stores around me have had WRF on the shelves for as long as I can remember. I've seen "Peters" branded R-P ammo, Winchester branded ammo, and CCI ammo throughout the last 10 years. It's still being made... just not in substantial quantities.

Surprisingly, I even run across spent hulls quite often. It may be obsolete, but it's still alive.

You are correct. Since the book came out the round looks to have revived some. Cowboy Action Shooting has revived some of the older rounds and this looks like one.

The reviews on the ammo are interesting.

The CCI warning on revolvers reads:
# This is not for revolvers. Most 22 WRF revolvers have undersized bores that cannot use a jacketed bullet.

A reference to older barrels. CCI also refers to older barrels by mentioning soft steel rifle barrels.

Another reason more may be being made these days. It looks to be about the same price as WMR ammo but could be quieter. Hmm, poaching?

I shoot the Winchester WRF round quite a bit in my Ruger Single Sixes using the magnum cylinders. It has proved to be very accurate even more than the 22LR and 22WMR rounds that I have fired in some of them. The Winchester has a lead bullet compared to CCI's with a jacketed bullet. The Winchester round in my area goes for less money than the CCI round.

I'll have to get some of this and try it out.

I took a look at Bob Forker's book on Ammo and Ballistics this round is not mentioned in the 4th edition.

Could be fun to play with.

i bought two boxes of these a couple months ago by mistake. was i kinda wondering if i could shoot these thru my .22 mag as well.

I have some for my NAA 22 mag - not a problem. One nuance. I bought their Rybka pocket holster which has a little pouch for reload (Not in Real Time!). It would hold 5 22 LRs but not 5 mags - but it would hold 5 WRFs. So I put those in it.

thank you all for the info

i got the boxes of ammo because they were a little *cheaper* than wmr's,as i mostly shoot at targets[no poaching]but the sticking is only on the Pug, my buddy's Black Widow chambered and shot them just fine, soooooo i guess they should be allright in the revolver they chamber in.again i thank all of you for your input.
