22 WMR, Win vs Rem vs CCI Maxie Myth

Hi Folks,

I have been looking for CCI Maxi Mag in 22 WNR ever sense
I got my NAA Mini with a 1 1/8th inch barrel.

I finally found some Maxi Mags and bought 200 rounds.

I decided to test the Maxi Mags against some other ammo I had.
Here is the three different rounds I used at a distance of 2 1/2
feet shot into two Yellow Pine 2 X 6's stacked on each other.

Photos show only the bottom 2 X 6,

First is the Remington .22 WMR 33 grain ACCUTIP-V

Next is Winchester .22 WMR 40 grain FMJ

Last Place goes to CCI Maxi Mag .22 WMR 40 grain TMJ

One of the Maxie Mags did not even exit the top 2 X 6!!!

Well,,,,,, at least I got 195 rounds of plinking ammo,, lol

I think I will stay with good old Remington and Winchester
for now.

The Maxi-Mag from CCI in .22 Magnum is optimized for use out of a rifle, and definitely for use out of a barrel longer than 1.75 inches. I'm a huge fan of the .22 Magnum as a light rifle round and even a handgun round, but the huge loss in barrel length when shooting from a micro-compact gun like the NAA is going to mean a severe loss in muzzle velocity and penetration.

An interesting comparison. I wouldn't have thought that there'd be that big of a discrepancy between .22 Magnum rounds in terms of penetration-at least in wood . I wonder if the same differences between the three brands/types would be manifested in a different medium (say ballistic gelatin or paper)?

Hay Dgludwig,

I have never used ballistics jell. I am just an old Arkie on SS.

This is the first time I have made a comparison with CCI Maxi
Mag,

but, as for the other two,

I do know that the tests in this thread do reflect what I have
found by using telephone books and wet news papers.

I will continue to compare because, I just do that kind of stuff,
in a Arkie way.

I do think that the CCI is just not what it is cracked up to be.

I have been doing this kind of stuff for 50 years.

I just always did it on a budget.

You are right NRAhab, but you would be surprised how much is left.
Just go check it out.

I'm not surprised.....

at the lack of penetration from your mini rev.

Did you notice how "undeformed" both of the TMJ/FMJ bullets were.

Get those little pills up to speed in a rifle bbl, or long handgun, and they penetrate all out of proportion to their size.

But what I found interesting is the difference between the three brands/types the op tested in terms of penetration, at least in the substrate he chose to compare with (wood). There's no question that a .22 rf magnum will perform better out of a longer barrel than a shorter one-so will most non-magnum .22 rf ammunition; particularly when comparing extremes in barrel lengths (1 1/8" to rifle barrels).
