.22 that shoots shorts, longs and lr

Well I finally got my tax return back from 1999. Don't ask me to explain that one. Am wanting to spend it on a nice .22 semi auto (or full auto, quit dreaming) that will be able to shoot shorts, longs and long rifles. I know that some of the older tubular fed models would shoot all of these but I haven't seen any of the newer ones such as Ruger, Winchester, Savage or Remington.

Any ideas or thoughts on this subject?

Thanks,

hmmmm.....

I had the same question a while back, except I was interested in a bolt action rifle. There probably aren't many semi-autos that will shoot shorts, longs, and long rifles---btw, why do you want it to shoot shorts longs, and long rifles? If you're planning on shooting CB shorts with it to reduce sound, I heard that CB short and Long ammo isn't enough to cock the pin back on some semi-autos. The only semi-auto that I know of is the Remington 552 BDL ---its styled after a shotgun, has a tubular magazine, and is semi-auto. I'd be interested in knowing what types of semi-auto rifles do short all three types of cartridges---

Remington SpeedMaster

I think the model number is 552. I got my first one when I was 10 and have had 2 more since... just love the little darlins. It does have a tubular magazine that holds 16 LRs and 21 shorts, if memory serves correctly. Don't know if they are still currently made or not as I bought my last 2 used, but they can be had in good shape for <$200. Of course, YMMV. CBs won't cycle it, though, so I'd plan on something noisier to shoot through it.

I know that the speedmaster does shoot them all but as far as I know they don't make them anymore. My Dad has one that shoots pretty good but the 10/22 shoots better and my Remington TargetMaster will shoot circles around it. That TargetMaster is a tack driver.

I don't want to shoot shorts just for the sound effect, the sub sonics do that job pretty nice. Was really curious as to if they were making any more along these lines. The sub sonics that I've shot have been very accurate.

The new model .22s don't seem to be made for shorts. The new Remington says to only shoot LR in it. We've got an old Nylon 66 that will shoot them all. While some say not to do it I think that is only because of the cycling question. I shoot shorts all the time in my Ruger MKII Target. Of course each round is loaded and ejected by hand.

Not sure about semi, but I know that the Henry lever action rifles will chamber and feed all of the above.

duh!

Kernel I can't believe that Marlin slipped my mind. I've got the 25N bolt action and it has taken it's share of squirrels. Will give them a look.

Thanks,

The Remington 552 Speedmaster is still in production. I just bought two of them, one for me and one for my Dad. They handle shorts, longs, and long rifles equally well, but CCI CBs won't open the bolt far enough to eject or feed the next round. I've seen several of these with many thousands of rounds through them & still quite accurate and reliable. A very simple, durable design in my experience.

It's on the Remington website...

They also make a pump version.

Well there you go ... if you don't "have" to have a semi, the Rem pump does the trick ....

Still on my "gotta have" list ....

I have many rifles, but out of all the long guns I have, my favorite is my Marlin lever action .22!
I just love the feel. It will chamber anything .22 (except 22 mags).
Dead-nuts accurate. It has killed dozens of New England woodchucks from 100 yds out.
Spin a hollow point behind the ear of a chuck and it will be doing the "dirt dance".
The beauty of this gun is it's smooth action and accuracy,
chamber a .22 short and it makes no more noise than a Daisy bb gun.
