22 shorts in a mossberg no. 42b

I was told that the shorts would damage my rifle today. Yesterday I put a couple dozen shorts through it and it still shoots fine. Are the shorts going to hurt it? The side of the barrel is stamped 22 s-l-lr and they fed fine through the magazine and functioned flawlessly. Also, if anyone knows where I can get magazines for this rifle please let me know.

Only a steady diet of shorts, probably in the thousands will eventually harm your gun. What happens is you get an erosion ring from the burning powder in the chamber at the location where the .22 short case ends. If enough erosion occurs, when you go to fire .22 LR, you will have bad extraction problems.

Given the fact that shorts generally cost more than LR why would you even want to use them?

I had a 22 short only pistol and now have 700 rounds of shorts. I like to use them because they are quieter and I can find the shorts easier than lr

True but not applicable to yours and mine

Hardly and I'm old enough to remember the 1890 Winchesters at shooting galleries. They went through thousands of rounds and that is what your "friend" was talking about. ..... :rolleyes:

I have the very same rifle and even as old as it is, I have no fears on shooting shorts. ... :)

Enjoy and;
Be Safe !!!

My Model 6 Remington single shot was my father's first gun. It was given to him around 1912-1914. He shot literally thousands of shorts in the gun. I shot a bunch, too. There is no chamber erosion. Shooting lots of shorts in a LR chamber will leave a ring of firing residue in the chamber. These rings can be difficult to remove. I think this is what many people think is chamber erosion.

I shoot shorts in my daughter's Cricket all the time. If after I'm long dead and gone, and my daughter's old as dirt, if my great grand daughter is having a problem because of all the shorts we shot through this rifle, I'll leave a note in the Trust document allowing her to request some of the trust money to buy a new rifle.:D
