.22 Short - What Determines if it's designed to shoot these?

What in a revolver(cylinder I suppose) determines if you can shoot .22 shorts? I live in the country but still don't want to draw attention to my backyard plinking and would like a revolver that I could shoot shorts in.

Thanx for the feedback - You've got a great forum here

Any revolver chambered for .22 lr should fire .22 shorts just fine. Accuracy may be a bit less tha usual, but okay for ranges out to 20 yards or so.

Good Luck...

hey yo

I have a 22 inch barrel marlin rifle and I have shot 22 shorts with it just fine. MY opinion is that if it can shoot 22lr, it can shoot 22 short. when you shoot it out of a rifle you think its not going to make it out if end of the barrel but it always does. :) :)

DE,
The .22 Short is to .22 LR as the .38 Special is to .357 Magnum or .44 Special is to .44 Magnum. If the gun is chambered for the longer case, you can safely fire the shorter case in it BUT NOT THE REVERSE!!

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: This refers to chambers and firing only. The feeding mechanism of some lever action or semi-auto rifles set up for .22 LR only MAY not handle the .22 Short properly but it will fire OK if it feeds correctly.

22 CB and BB

You can also use 22 CB and 22 BB. These are shorter than a 22 shout and contain no powder, but use the primer as your energy sorcee. Some people use these in the house with a trap to catch the lead. If used outside will sound like a loud air rifle.

I've had good luck with remmington sub sonics out of my Henry..

Usually use those when I'm camping though, at home just the normal stuff.

22 shorts

About the only problem I've ever heard of shooting shorts in a LR chamber is you MIGHT foul the chamber enough to make it difficult to chamber a LR round. I suspect routine cleaning would take care of that.

Cajun, that problem is in just about anything that will hander shorter lenght cartridges ;)

DE50WEE, might be worth just shooting normal .22LR's, and then calling your neighboors and see if they heard anything :D

seems to me that any .22 long rifle revolver will fit your needs in shooting .22 shorts. though when your done shooting use a clean bore copper brush barrel cleaner to scrub the cylinder holes clean. this is true when firing shorter cartridges out of cylinders designed to also handle longer cased rounds. Example.38's out of .357 and .44 special out of .44 mag's. not doing so will result in sticking extraction and insertion of the longer cased rounds.

Thanx for the great feedback....Don't know why I never ran into this before...Guess I never had a place where it was feasible to shoot. I have thought about just trying long rifles and sending my wife over to where the neighbors are so she can listen to even see if it's anything to be concerned with.

All that has been said is true about the 22 short. The subsonic 22 LR ammo is pretty quiet too. The damage that a 22 short will do will probably suprise you on plinking targets.

Remember this advice does not apply to auto handguns. In most cases, the 22 short round does not have sufficient power to eject the spent cartridge from a 22 LR auto pistol. There are target grade 22 short pistols around if that appeals to you.

No...I was thinking about a Taurus 94 that I saw at a local shop. For the price it seems like a fairly well put together little gun.

Try the Aguila Colibri 22,s I have broke wind louder then these little rascals.

That's one way to put what I was gonna also say. :) A .22 short in a revolver is still very loud. Use colibri in the handgun, or subsonic shorts or longs in a turnbolt rifle. Or best of all, use colibris in a rifle - very very quiet.

I have Taurus 94 just for this purpose and it works well with all .22s.I shoot a lot of those Colibri thru it because i live in a Metro. area and i shoot in basement or garage with a backdrop and has been mentioned they're not much louder than an air-rifle and surpriisingly accurate. I would also recommend a 94 they're just a fun little gun and reasonably priced. You might get a firing ring if you don't clean often but how long does it take to clean a .22 revolver. Good luck Safe shooting GL

I once tried to find a rifle chambered for the 22 short only, thinking it would make for a more accurate plinker/pest remover. Never found one, if one exists, the availablity and price I'm sure would not be practical. So I used Super Colibris in my Kimber Hunter to knock off dogfood stealing, excess numbers, squirrels (a few are nice, but not dozens), and grackles. Got tired of taking out my decent Kimber and getting it dirty (handprints, dirt, powder residue) whenever opportunity arose and then having to clean it up for storage, and then have another opportunity pop up. So, now I keep my better rifles for target and intentional hunts. For the backyard shots I bought a Cricket single loader at walmart for 100 bucks. With it I can knock off tree rats, grackles with the the colibris and not worry about cleaning, care, etc. Gets the job done.

Tree Rats? Hey, I thought I was the only one that used that term! Seriously, we are overrun with those rodents around here, and discharging any sort of firearm in this neighborhood is verboten -- even pellet guns or BB guns. Aaarrggh! Miserable varmits!
