.22 rimfire pressures

I'm not sure of the proper place for this question, so am posting it here.

Does anyone have an idea of chamber pressures for .22 lr high vel and standard vel cartridges? I seem to remember an article about load developing for this cartridge in which the author hinted that for some loads the pressure could be much the same as for some centerfire handgun or centerfire rifle loads. Is this the reason that modern .22 rimfire loads are not recommended for older weapons?

Also, how about pressures for .22 magnum rounds?

Again, thanks for all responses.

CIP standard for .22 Long Rifle is up to 30,000 CUP, which would probably put it closer to 40,000 PSI if measured via strain gauge.

30,000 ? In the old days zip guns where made with car antennas for barrels .That doesn't sound like 30,000 ?? 45acp is about 20,000 38 special is less than that .

.22 Long and Long Rifle = 24,000

That's the figure I recall, as well.

Also, remember, that's pounds per square inch. A .22 LR has quite a bit less than one square inch of case, so the total pressure when the round fires would be < 24,000#.

I checked SAMMI website and the 22lr high velocity does indeed have a maximum working pressure of 24,000psi. However I as well have been trying to determine the maximum pressure of standard velocity 22 lr ammo. I even posted this question to the cartridge collectors forum with no luck. Does anyone know of a site I can obtain this imfo?

Gary, just for imformation sakes, the pressures cant be the same. Many older guns are proofed for standard velocity ammo only. If high velocity ammo is used in these old 22's it will damage them. The older Marlin 39's will break the bolts, Colt Woodsman's will break the mainspring housing if high velocity ammo is used.
