.22 rimfire bulk pack contents,,,

I ask all of my friends who shoot Mini Mags to save the plastic containers for me,,,
One of my buddies dropped off 14 of them yesterday evening.

I take the cartridges from Federal Bulk Packs and reload the plastic boxes,,,
It just makes it easier to carry several hundred rounds.

Anyways I was placing the cartridges in the plastic boxes,,,
I opened a new 550 round bulk pack,,,
There were exactly 550 rounds.

I opened the second bulk pack,,,
There were exactly 550 rounds in it as well.

I opened the third bulk pack,,,
Again, exactly 550 rounds.

Just for the heck of it I opened and counted the rounds in two more bulk packs,,,
Each bulk pack counted out to exactly 550 rounds.

This isn't earth-shattering news,,,
But I was very surprised at the accuracy of the round count.

I would have been happy if it were plus-or-minus 5-6 rounds.

How many go bang?

With the Federal Bulk Pack,,,
All of them do.

I can't recall a dud round from Federal.

From Remington Golden Bullet bulk packs,,,
I get a small handful of duds per pack.

I'm on my third Federal bulk pack, shooting from my Marlin 795, and have had zero failures-to-fire or eject. (Ok, a few were fired from a single shot, but they all fired.)

It is likely me, but I've not noted any accuracy differences between the bulk and the standard box, nor with other brands of the same relative quality.

I typically run between 6-8K rounds of walmart federal 550 ct bulk packs a year, and have been doing so for a decade or more.

I think I might have had one or two duds in all that time. Its easily my favorite plinking ammo.

Glad to hear that they have 550 in each box. if I had been 5 short in each box all these years I'd be really short by now...

I had a box of the federals I really didn't like them, they seemed to be very inconsistent velocity and really inaccurate compare to the winchester 555 bulk pack.

I am not at all suprised at the accuracy of the count. I design automation systems for a living and counting solid objects going into a container is a no brainer with the right equipment.

I also buy Federal bulk pack at the local Walmart and do not have any problems with them.

Have a great day.

walmart 550, i'll get one low powered round per pack on average. every couple boxes i'll get a dud maybe.

Aarond...you crack me up LMAO..

Only you would, on a whim sit down and count that many .22 rounds, just to find the average deviation..But, I have to admit I always assumed that they were plus/minus 10 rounds, now I know how accurate they are.

On that same note, All of my hornady .223 55gr bullets that supposedly come 100 to a box, ALWAYS gives me 101...so after I reload 2000 rounds, I have enough for another box of 20 LOL..

Thanks for the info bud..still laughing a lil:D

Geez. Unless that pack said "approximately", it had BETTER have exactly 550 rounds. With modern equipment, it shouldn't be a problem. Watch "How It's Made" or the similar shows sometime. This ain't your daddies automation.

Hello BlackJackID,,,

Well, I was repackaging them,,,
And I had a decent DVD going in the background,,,
Then there was that large glass of Grand Marnier on the rocks.

I was simply amused by the accuracy of the count,,,
I really would have expected plus-minus a few rounds at least.

After work yesterday I went to the range,,,
I put 150 rounds downrange,,,
No problems at all.

Who counts?
I use bulk pack almost exclusively. Get maybe one or two duds every second box.
I once bench rested my target rifle at 100 yards. Groups were so small I wished someone was watching or I was in a match.
Good stuff, regardless of brand and great value.
BTW, it helps keep my property pretty well critter free.

I would be of the consideration that they are actually loading the bulk packs by weight..that is, the weight that should end up with 500 properly loaded cartridges...

Probably the reason that you don't find duds...if the weight was off X% the package would be rejected, the dud automatically found and eliminated, and a the good ones returned to the fill line. Pretty easy to do with the tech avaiable these days.

Using weight would also be an automatic quality control check. If too many batches of 500 were rejected, they would know to check the line for the source of the problem.

The option that there were more in the pack then the count given would be an indication to me that QC wasn't great.

I'm pretty sure that the allowable variances in charge/bullet/case weights would mask one or two (or several) "duds" out of 550 that somehow left the line without powder in them.

Plus, most of the .22lr duds I've encountered have full-weight charges anyway - there was just something wrong with the priming compound that kept them from igniting.

Scott, the great thing about rimfires is that the primer is (or at least is supposed to be) distributed evenly around the rim. If a primer strike doesn't set one off, you can frequrently reinsert the round with the primer hitting a different part and the round will go bang the next time you pull the trigger.

Yep - I do that sometimes if I'm not certain if the problem is with the gun or with the ammo. I still consider them "duds", though, even if a subsequent strike ignites them.

they give you exactly 550 rounds but you're lucky if 500 go bang.

That hasn't been my experience. Like some others, few if any duds. I had a few more with Remington bulk packs, but still nowhere near 10%.
