.22 rifle plinking in Northern Virginia?

Hi folks,
I've been reading the posts here with great interests. I moved up here to Northern Virginia a few months ago and am looking for guidance on where I can take my .22 rifle just to target shoot and generally enjoy the rifle and the outdoors. I do not hunt, I just target shoot. Can I legally just 'wander off into the woods', do I need to be in a Wildlife Management Area, some sort of Park, or what? I do know one person with farmland but it is pretty far from here. Any advice? Thanks! -JerryC

Generally, if you wander into the woods to shoot your .22, you're going to be arrested.

Because of population density, NoVA has some pretty stringent restrictions on shooting guns outdoors. There's a minimum amount of property that you need before you can legally shoot.

Your best bet is to join the Issaic Walton League in Chantilly.

Try Izaak Walton League to find one!

Funky spelling, but they don't advertise their existence very much. Trying to find the chapters can prove frustrating unless you know someone that is a member.

I had to look at my latest newsletter to refresh my memory on the spelling.

I am not crazy about the organization personally but it is a place to shoot in your area. I belong to one of the chapters in Maryland and go there when I have to be in the area.
