.22 Revolver

I recently just went camping and I was thinking about buying a cheap .22 revolver for plinking. Does anyone know any kind of 22 revolver for under $300 and going to last and not just break.

Thanks,
Zach

If you like single action . . a Heritage Rough Rider is a good value for the price - usually you can find them for around $200 or less. A lot of folks make fun of them but I bought one just for a "knock around gun" on the farm. I got a 4 3/4" barrel and it's a fun little SA. I have Colts, Rugers, S & Ws and while it's not in that category, it's a good handgun and the price is affordable . . . plus I don't worry if it should get scratched, etc. The woodchucks and varmints don't know if they're getting shot by a Colt or a Rough Rider . . so it gets the job done.

Check and see what you can find used as well. A good vintage H & R makes a good kit gun as well. The Pathfinder is a good one too.

A good used Hi-Standard Sentinel 9 shot with 4" or 6" barrel. Mine is 59 years old and is still a good shooter:

I have an SP101 in 22 which I love. However they run about 550. It might be worth the extra $$$.
I would note that 22 revolvers, like 22 pistols, are temperamental beasts. They need a very hard hammer spring and the cylinder gap has to be particularly tight and well-aligned. It might be worth spending some extra money to make sure it goes bang every time and shoots straight. You can get that with a cheaper gun, but it's a crap shoot.

That low? In double action, Charter's going to be the only game in town.

Single action, Heritage Rough Rider.

And no, we can't guarantee they'll last well.

Be willing to spend a bit more, and you'll be into a price range where you can buy various models of Ruger.

Try searching private sales at a local gun show. My Son-in-law found a guy selling a Ruger Single Six clone, made in Germany, (I forget the brand name) and talked him down to $100. Has both LR and Mag cylinders. It had a lot of "box wear" but he uses it trapping and didn't need something pretty. Something like that would make a good camping gun. Wouldn't make much difference if it got dropped or had a bit of rust, for $100 it makes a good beater gun.

Armybrat is right . The Sentinel revolvers are some of the best over looked 22's out there, in my opinion. Kinda' hard to find though. One of the older Charter Arms 22 pathfinders (as mentioned above) are excellent. They'll last forever with normal care. I have one I found in a pawn shop for $249.00. Excellent little gun. JMHO

The Charter Arms and Rossi 22 revolvers are about as cheap as it gets for a double action. The Ruger LCR might be a reasonable choice as well.

Have you considered a semi-auto? I believe the Ruger SR-22P runs around $300. It is the kind of pistol one might carry on the trail or plinking versus anything serious.

I have the LCR and SR-22P. Don't have either the Rossi or Charter Arms. I have always been a little interested in those two brands, but I have Colt, S&W, and Ruger stuff and really don't need to buy something of that quality.

The problem with that price ceiling is that you are pretty much limited to the used gun market. With some luck, you might find a quallty gun in good condtion, but I would avoid makes like H&R or Iver Johnson, for which parts are no longer available and which were of mediocre qualtiy to begin with. And certainly avoid cheap imported revolvers, especially junk like the RG guns.

I always like to play the mind game where I figure a 'quality' .22 revolver (or any kind of gun) will last about 'forever' so the cost per month will be virtually zero.

That allows me to feel better about spending more for guns...but it doesn't help in keeping money in the checking account.

The Charter Arms Pathfinders are good revolvers. I have two, a 2" LR snub, and a 4" 22LR/22WMR combo. You wont find the LR/WMR at the $300 price point, but a standard 4" LR will be close. Buds currently has them for $353 and free shipping. Add your transfer fee, and you will be in for around $375. I know that's a little higher than the $300 limit, but for a new Double Action revolver, made in America, with a lifetime warranty, and excellent Customer Service, you cant beat them. The Charter wont have a perfect finish, but the important things that do matter, like timing, lockup, build quality, and materials of construction, are very good.

You might try searching www.Gunbroker.com by 22LR. Then narrow the search down by revolver.

I see those Heritage Rough Riders under $200 frequently. Seems every little gun and pawn store carries them around where I live. I've read good and bad on them. Probably pick one up next time I'm home.

I have S&W K-22 that is a pleasure to shoot. You might look for one with some finish wear as a shooter vs. a collector.

I have several old fashioned H&R (or the sister company, NEF) 22 and 32 caliber plinkers. They are easy to find on GunBroker for less than $150. I have yet to wear them out. Since it is a plinker and not a SD gun, if it were to malfunction, it's really no big deal.

I also got an old Tanfoglio single action 22 for around $100. It works fine.

I have also read good things about the old High Standard Sentinels. They made the same thing for Sears and called it a JC Higgins.

When I go target shooting I take my amazing Browning Buck Mark. When I go rambling around my BiL's property I bring something worth about $100, so that if it falls in the creek or gets stepped on by a cow or something I will not be out much money. There is a time and place for precision instruments, and a time and place for cheap beaters.

Best option in the 300.00 range would be a used Ruger Single Six. Should be able to get a decent one for 300.00.

I have 3 H&R and 1 NEF revolver, good clean ones are all over gunbroaker. Mine have had no issues but a second hand Single Six would be my top choice.

I have 3 H&R's and 2 Irver Johnsons. All are around 50 years old and still going strong. I have had no problems ordering parts that I did need for either of the brands.

they all shoot great and have been very reliable.
