.22 Questions

Hey guys. I have shot few guns in my life.
I am looking at taking my CFSC, and getting a little .22.
What i was wondering, was, what rifle.
Bolt Action or semi?
The bolt action would most likely be the Savage Arms Mark II, and the Semi would be a Ruger 10/22. I would put on a scope, and a 25 round magazine if possible.
What do you guys think? I will be doing 99% target shooting and 1% small game.
Thanks guys.

I was gonna get the 10/22, but then I figured that I would just burn through the ammo and not really practice my aim with it being a semi auto. I figure the bolt will force me to slow down and take more thought to each shot. I plan on getting the Savage Mark II this weekend. I was going to get the CZ 452 Military Trainer as it seems to feel more like a "real" rifle, but then I figured I could get the Savage and some things for my other guns and spend the same amount as one CZ.

Yeah, i'll just be going through more ammo, be cleaning my gun more, and what not. I also almost find bolt actions like...funner.
Or is there another acknowledgeable .22?

You might go to a gun store and just hold a Browning Semi-Auto. Then see if any other .22 feels as good.

Hello, TargetCrusher..Well there is one action you didn't mention..The single-shot. Winchester/Browning used to make the low-wall .22 L.R. Ballard LLC & C. Sharps make them & Uberti has copys of both High-Wall & Low-Wall Win. This is my favorite action.

I have a 10/22 and a Marlin 795. Both are really decent guns (the marlin is quite a bargain). I also have a bolt action .22 magnum (another Marlin). The bolt action is by far my favorite, one of my favorite guns period. Lots of fun to shoot and being bolt action, I can afford the .22 magnum cartridge for it. Not sure of the model number now but our Boy Scouts camp outfitted itself with all new Savage bolt action .22 LRs a year ago. Very nice rifles. For me there's something about the bolt action that adds to the fun of shooting a rifle.

I just traded in my semi .22 and got a Savage Mark II...couldn't be happier. The gun is very accurate, the bolt is smooth and its a lot of fun to shoot. I bought the BV model and put a weaver rimfire scope on it and it shoots great. I purchased ten round mags directly from Savage, but I haven't seen anything that holds more than 10 rounds...

I think a bolt action, be it single shot or multiple round mags, help me to slow things down and shoot more accurately. That being said, some of the most accurate .22 shooting I've done was with an old Marlin model 60. A buddy and I were trying to make Skoal cans set on edge jump with open sight shooting at about 50 yards. After much deliberate shooting and no jumping, we checked the cans and found tightly spaced groups that went through and through without budging the cans.

I guess slowing down and shooting, rather than a bolt gun made the difference after all.
