.22 Problems

I took the stock and trigger assembly off my marlin semi-auto tonight and from inside the reciever behind where the trigger would go half a dozen chunks (looks like one large piece shattered) of plastic fell out. They are all about O <-- that size. Anyone have an idea what it could be, and if it will effect the rifle?

That sounds like your buffer. Those can be purchased and replaced.

Unless you're like me... I recently purchased two of them and almost as quickly set them down and promptly lost them.

Another issue will be peening of the aluminum receiver at the rear of the ejection port. Without the buffer, the charging handle slams into that area pretty hard.

I can see what im guessing is a buffer in the far rear of the reciever (small off white square) if that helps at all. The "buffer" looks identicle to the pieces that I found if that helps. I'm thinking your all right thinking its a buffer but I cant see where it would go. I was going to go sight in my scope with maybe 10 or 15 rounds max, will this damage the gun alot or can I get away with a few rounds without causing any damage?

IMO, damage is not likely in just a few rounds. The problem is, do you know how long the buffer has been broken? It may just now be starting to break up. It might even still be intact enough to "buffer" for a bit longer.
It would be hard to tell without examining the buffer.

The buffer is in about 7 pieces in my drawer, I also don't think a couple round will hurt anything but as Rodger P mentioned, I have no idea how long it has been broken. I'm going to go to a smith and buy a few of them for spares as well as have him show me how to replace them. Thank you all very much for your ideas.

I assumed there were two buffers from how intact the one i can see looks, but it might be just a fraction of it chipped off. Anyone know if they have multiple buffers or just the main one in the rear?

Just the one. You can see most of it in this pic.

Thank you very much, that is the one I can see. The bottom of it must be chipped pretty bad. I have had the gun for quite a few years and alot of rounds have been through it. It could be just from firing that it became chipped, but im thinking its from letting it sit in the cold and shooting it.

I have one more .22 I haven't taken apart in a few years, I figure I might as well replace that one while im at it. I still have the bulk of the buffer intact, im gonna give it another month or so before I replace it. I only hunt with it so it doesn't see alot of firing usually.
