.22 magnum revolver

WHO makes the best .22 magnum revolver? I am looking to buy one for small game hunting, just looking for a pretty decent gun with good accuracy out of about a 6 inch barrel. What do you think of this rimfire for small game?:)

I ditto that. I own a Ruger Super Single Six. Stainless, 5 1/2 inch barrel. With the 22 WMR cyl. its a tack driver. With the 22LR cyl. its a plinker.

I'd also recommend that you look at a Ruger. I've got one and it's a lot more accurate than I am :)

Plus it's real purty! lol...

Have you all really had that good of luck with Single Sixes and the .22 Magnum? I had one ages ago that was fantastic with LRs but was terrible with Magnums. It sort of turned me off Rugers and .22 Magnums. If they are really that good, I might have to try again. The .22 Magnum is one of my favourite rounds.

^I actually had better luck with the magnum rounds than with the .22 LR rounds. Magnum rounds were more accurate for me in the Single Six, while the .22 LR rounds were lackluster. Still good enough for plinking.

.22 MAG

I've been thinking about getting a .22 mag. What makes it such a good round? The ammo costs as much as larger, more powerful rounds.

I haven't yet been able to see where it fits in. I have .22 LR.
.38 special, 9mm, ,40 cal, 10mm, .45 cal, .357 cal, and .44 mag/special. Where does the .22 mag fit in? What gap does it fill?

THANKS

The better .22Mag loads (CCI MaxiMag +V/TNT fr'instance) will do better than 1,500fps from a Single Six 5.5". That's up in "self defense grade" power levels, and is known as a good load for coyote or similar. Yet the same gun can also switch cylinders to .22LR for cheap practice or the sort of thing those are good for.

Very flexible, very fun, very cheap to feed practice fodder into and in a pinch, can be pressed into respectable self defense duty.

What's not to like?

Even with 1,500 FPS, I still don't consider the .22 magnum as a "defensive" cartridge. Instead, I see it as getting roughly .22 LR performance from a carbine length barrel. In other words, the range should be extended and you can varmint slightly bigger critters.

I guess as a latch ditch defensive pistol, the .22 magnum is "ok", but no way would I consider it a satisfactory primary defensive pistol. Its a great cartridge though, especially for those that enjoy longer range varminting. Plus, it makes a lot of noise (loud round) and sounds more powerful than it really is! ;)

I have a Ruger Single Six and a Charter Arms Pathfinder. The Pathfinder is more accurate than the Ruger and is double action. It was my "snake gun" while hunting.

I just shot my Ruger Single Six for the first time last week. I have a Stainless 6" model. It was very accurrate with both 22lr and 22mag. I was also very pleasant to shoot and loads of fun.

I've got a Ruger Single 6 .22 Magnum 5.5" and it's a nice revolver. Very accurate and very durable. I highly recommend them.

Mine is a blue barrel.

I picked up a Smith & Wesson 648 at the local gun store a couple of months ago, they had such a good price on it I couldn't pass it up. Here is a pic, as you can see it is a stainless 22 mag. I have only put a 100 rounds thru it, and so far it is very accurate. I have looked at the Rugers too, and I like the ability to change cylinders between the 22lr and 22 mag. I just wish 22 mag ammo was cheaper.

The Smith model 648 is a fine revolver for your needs, but it's costly. I too would have to go with the Single Six.

Love the Ruger. Keep meaning to try the 22 mag cylinder, but that stuff's expensive. I got it as an instructional gun, because I think a single action 22 is a great way to introduce people to handguns.
