.22 Magnum--Anybody like it?

According to Scott Volquartsen, on rimfirecentral.com, Ruger is discontinuing the 10/22 in .22 Magnum.

Naturally, this makes me itch to acquire one first.

Anybody find this cartridge useful? It's 40 grains at 1900+ fps or 50 grains at 1500+ fps.

Regards.

I personally don't own one, but a close friend has a Winchester 9422 in .22WMR. We go rabbit hunting often, and his rifle excels at the task. He shoots the CCI rounds with the Speer TNT hollow points, and they make mighty large holes in Jacks. He regularly prints groups in the 2"-3" range with the help of a 6X scope.

My gripe with the 10/22 Mag is price. It really doesn't seem that much different than the LR version from the outside with the exception of the integral scope mounts. With Marlin selling it's nice bolt action .22WMR's for 50% less, it's no wonder Ruger is having a hard time moving them.
IMO a bolt gun would be a better platform for the .22WMR anyway as the higher accuracy potential lets you take advantage of the longer range.

I have a Marlin 25 in 22 mag. Great groundhog gun out to around 125 yards. Shoots so well I had to get Vari-XII 3-9 scope for it. The scope was more than twice what I paid for the rifle. Cost for ammo is much higher than 22LR so I don't plink with it much. But it is a useful round to have!

Cost of ammo is one reason why I've chosen to skip the .22 Mag. and go straight to .25-20. It's very cheap to reload and shoot, and gives me excellent accuracy out to 150-175 yards.

I love the .22 Mag. My rig is a 77/22 "All Weather" with laminated stock. As much as I would like a 10/22 Mag, I can't justify the cost since it won't shoot as well as my bolt action without the usual 10/22 upgrades.

Thanks for all the replies

I've made my mind up to get the rifle. Bought it today. Nothing makes me want a gun more than thinking it might not be available next year. Guess it's my California upbringing.

Upgrades? Well, only the trigger group (already ordered a Volquartsen replacement), stock (custom?) and barrel (Green Mountain?). The rest of the rifle's good to go(!).

I'm sick and I don't want to get well.:p

Regards.

Ledbetter,

You won't be disappointed. The .22 magnum is twice the round the .22LR is.

I bought a Remington 597 .22 magnum last year on a lark, and now I am especially glad I did. I didn't realize the added performance of the .22 magnum round.
When I rolled a chicken-killing large coyote with it at 60 some yards (with 40gr Rem. JSPs) at a friends farm, I realized its potential.

Personally, I like it. Yeah, ammunition is selling for more than it really should be, but it might just be worth it.

I love this cartridge in rifles.

I went in to buy a 22 just for squirrels. The store owner gave me a NIB Savage bull barrel 22 mag with simmons 3-9x scope for $167.

It's a tack driver, and tends to give much more humane kills. Ammo isn't as cheap as I'd like, but a darn sight cheaper than 22 Hornet!!

Bowser.

22 magnum is quite nice

I own a Marlin 25MN and can go out 100 yards and about a 1.5 inch group with CCI FMJ ammo. I love the caliber, and the accuracy of the 22WMR with a bolt action rifle. The amount of power you get is quite high for next to zero recoil, I highly recommend it for medium game hunting, even turkey hunting. Don't plink with it, you'll find yourself breaking the bank!

Bowser,

Reload.

Ammo price for 50 .22 Hornets is a lot closer to the price of a box of .22 LRs than a box of .22 Mags. if you do, especially if you use cast lead bullets and keep velocity down a bit.

We love 'em here because rimfires come under a different licensing category from centrefires. Even a Hornet is classified as a "high-power" here and requires a Police District Superintendent's permission to own.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the new Chinwester "varmint" ammo is up just below (original) Hornet velocities. I know my friend has one and is just blown away (bad pun) by what the "new" ammo does to a grapefruit at 100 yards, compared to the old solid cra@p.

Yes, it ain't cheap. But it's still as cheap as Hornet reloads (here, at least).

Accuracy has improved -- 1.5" is pretty common now (that's at 10 yards).

Joking!! That's at 100 yards, of course.

Bruce and all,

Don't reload, so no advantage there for me in other calibers.

Bruce, you just made me remember that here in Kalifornia there are also legal distinction between rimfires and centerfires. I think I'll give it a pistol grip, flash suppressor and a bayonet lug.;) I'm not 100% sure I'm kidding.

Regards to all. I appreciate the info and comments.

How much are you all paying for .22WMR? From the tone of this thread you'd think it's $15 a box. I bought my friend two 50rd boxes of Winchester HP's for $6.50 each. That's only 0.13/round. That's not too bad IMO for quality new production ammo.

Have a 22MN bolt action from Marlin. Accuracy is great when I sighted it in at 50 yds. Bought 22 mag. ammo years ago at $4.50 to 4.80 a box. Won't have to restock for quite awhile.

I have a Marlin 882ss (very accurate) and a Savage 93GTD. Both are a lot of fun.

Come on---ammo is cheap for the .22 mag---a box of white box 9mm at Wally's costs more($5.96)-----50 rounds of white box .223 would work out to be about $10. I'm getting CCI Maxi-Mags around here for $5.50. Not as cheap as .22LR---but not the same class of cartridge either.

My .257 WBY mag costs $34.99 for 20 rounds--for the cheap stuff and $45 for 20 rounds of the expensive stuff---(would work out to be $112.50 for 50 rounds)--------$5.50 for 50 rounds of .22 mag. is a bargain.
