I am ordering my .22 this week. I went to Wal Mart yesterday to check some out. Unfortunatly Wally World would not let me see the rifles. I guess the are no longer going to sell then to the public  Anyhow, I have decided I want to go with a mag fed .22(no tubes or bolts). Now I know alot about the Ruger 10/22, but I have also found a few others that look to be good rifles. Theres the Savage 64, Remington 597and a Marlin(#?). Are these rifles any good. Im not looking to trick them out...just to plink.
Thanks

Personally, I prefer the Ruger 10/22. It has a very reliable mag design, not to mention, you can get factory mags at Wal Mart for $10 all day long. They can also be extremely accurate and have plenty of accessories available.

For general plinking, there are few "bad" .22 rifles. What you'll find is that they can be persnickety as to which brand and type of ammo gives the best groups.

As a for instance, I went out to my benchrest with a mixed mess of about ten different brands and types of ammo to test in my 10/22 (25 yards). Only one of them gave me a really tight group. A few were acceptable, and a few were horrible. There's no way to know ahead of time.

Whatever you get, buy only one box of 50 at a time, and write down your test results.

If you're looking for plinking pleasure, don't overlook the used guns at your dealer. I bought a Norinco lookalike Mauser 98k in 22 LR. It's a fun little plinker with a smooth trigger and pretty accurate to boot.
