.22 mag cartridge question

My freind is planning on buying a marlin 882 .22 mag rifle.

Can this shoot .22 long rifle cartridges too, or is it restricted to the .22 mag?

Thanks!

The 22 mag is not just longer than the 22LR but the case is also fatter. It might fire a 22LR but the bullet will deform rattling down the camber on it's way to the bore. Extraction will also be a problem. It may sort of work but it's a poor idea at best. If your friend wants to shoot 22LR he should get the proper gun.

It's highly recommended that you don't attempt something as stupid as using ammo that your gun is not marked for.

I would never shoot a cartridge out of a gun that doesnt say it can shoot it properly. I am planning on getting a Marlin 25MN .22mag, already got ammo for a gun i dont got. Compared it with .22lr by trying to fit a .22mag into a LR case made my CCI.

I have a Marlin 882, and I think it is a great rifle. Your friend will enjoyu it, but DON"T use anything in it but, .22WMR. For that matter don't use anything In any .22WMR rifle but the the proper ammo. Would you use a .380 auto in a 9mm? Same thing.
