22 lr hand gun

I am looking for good 22 LR hand gun either revolver or semi. It needs to be inexpensive. I plan to use it target shooting and some light hearted competitions like bowling pin shoots. Any suggestion?

The best value for the money in a .22 LR pistol in the U.S. today is without a doubt the Ruger Mk II or Mk III series pistols. They are inexpensive, top quality, deliver more accuracy than most of us are capable of, and extremely dependable. I would recommend one of these without any reservation at all.

There are also a number of manufacturers that make single action revolvers in 22lr... ruger single six comes to mind...i love shooting my dads old high standard .22 revolver but i dont shoot it near as well as the mkII... that being said still be sure to check out the revolver section ... i think i just like playing with hammers :D

S & W 22a-1. Low price. Accurate. Easy to field strip to clean. Only problem I can think of is locating magazines at a low price. It does come with 2 magazines. The grip is large and some people don't like that.

Dont overlook the Browning Buckmark. The Camper model is about the same money as the Ruger, you'll probably find you prefer one over the other just looking at them at the counter.

I'd suggest one of the Rurger Mark III or Browning Buckmark variants if you prefer autos. The Buckmarks are a little less expensive but have a good reputation.

In revolvers, there's the S&W model 17 (I think - whatever they call their "Kit Gun" these days), Ruger Bearcat, Ruger Single Six, and Charter Arms Pathfinder. I've only shot an old Kit Gun, a real gem, and a Single Six. I liked the Kit Gun better, but they're overpriced.

Ruger MKII/III or Browning Buckmark. The MKII is my first choice and the MKIII is really just as good if the "improvements" don't bother you. I actually like the Buckmark better than the MKIII, I just can't get past the loaded chamber indicater and mag. safety.

Bowling pin shoot...with a 22?

Works actually pretty well. We used to have an indoor league in winter back in Indiana.

bellv,

you have several guns to choose from in the lower price segment that should fit your requirements. They were all mentioned already and so was the fact, that you should try the different ones; Ruger MkII/III, Browning, S&W22A, and the Beretta Neos should also fall into that class.

It all boils down to personal preference.

If you are looking for inexpensive then like many others have said get a Ruger. I personally like the Browning Buck Mark more but they do cost a bit more as well. I also own a Beretta Neos that is an excellent shooter and can be had for around $225.

Don't worry about the Ruger Mk II or MkIII debate, . . . skip them and go to the Browning. Don't look back. It is a superior firearm, especially in the trigger.

It is far more accurate than 99% of us will ever be able to shoot, . . . is not at all "complicated", . . . and is very easy to strip and clean.

May God bless,
Dwight

The Beretta Neos Inox is an excellent all around .22, especially with the 4" barrel. The interchangeable barrel is also a nice feature; 4", 6.5" and 8".

I have a friend who loves his Walther 22, and swears it is the most accurate pistol he has ever owned.

I recommend a Ruger MkII Target or a Browning Buckmark Camper. Both have 5.5 inch bull barrels, are accurate and not expensive. I have a Taurus 94 revolver which I don't recommend. I also have a S&W 41 which is in another class of price and accuracy, but nice.

Any of these will function fine,,,

Pick them up and get the one that makes your hand feel all smiley.

Ruger Mk II or Mk III - Luger-ish grips
Ruger 22/45 - Simulated 1911 feel
Beretta U22 NEOS - really slender grips
Browning Buckmark - Standard grips are finger grooved
S&W 22A - Fat grips

If you locked these pistols in a shooting vise,,,
I doubt any one would perform radically better than any other.
The one major difference is in the size and shape of the grips themselves.

That's why I say you should pick each gun up,,,
Determine which grip you like best,,,
Then buy and enjoy that gun.

.

Beretta Neos is worth looking at. I have one for plinking and it is fun, accurate, and easy to strip and clean.

One minor correction to a post above: The Neos is currently available in 4.5 and 6 inch barrels. A 7.5 inch barrel is available as an aftermarket part.

Ruger MK II, NOT III. If you can't find a II get a Browning Buckmark

OK, why an MKII & not an MKIII? I see above that there are some improvements that some don't like. Is that the only difference? Is the MKIII as good a gun overall? Are the new MK's as durable? I want to buy one for my wife to take to the range, but I don't want to buy her junk.
