.22 LR and .22 Magnum revolver

Heard a rumour from an unreliable source that there is a revolver that can take the .22LR as well as a .22 Magnum, with which you would change the cylinder. Is there something like this on the market? Or is this just wishful thinking?

I want a revolver for me too plink with and for my wife for home defense, and it seems impossible that I can have two handguns under South Africa’s firearms law (Have been trying now unsuccessfully for months to get a second firearm license, so guess I have to stick with my PPK as a primary weapon). The .22 LR is the ultimate plinker round, while the .22 Magnum will hopefully be dissuading enough to any attacker.

A conversion kit isn’t an answer, because you have to get a lisence for every barrel.

Thanks a lot in advance

Ruger Single Six Convertible, comes with both cylinders.
Heritage Rough Rider Convertible, comes with both cylinders

These are both single action pistols, I would get the Ruger before the Heritage. I have seen a few Smith & Wesson 22 Mag Revolvers that have an extra 22lr cylinder, but they are rare and not a current production item.

As Dave noted there have been a number of these offered by various gun makers. Problem is that the Mag is slightly larger bore so the Long Rifle bullets are too small and velocity and accuracy suffer. I had a beautiful S&W M48 .22 mag with the extra cylinder but it shot awful so I sold it and bought a dedicated .22 Long Rifle revolver.

I imagine this is smaller than what you're looking for, but North American Arms manufactures a couple of small revolvers that can be fitted for .22 LR and .22 magnum. You can buy conversion cylinders for them. They make a model called the Black Widow. It has a 2" barrel. You can get it with adjustable sights or fixed sights. They also make a model called the Mini Master, which has a 4" barrel. I bought the Black Widow with fixed sights. It's amazingly accurate in both calibers. I bought mine for plinking at the range more than anything.

Take a look at www.naaminis.com

single six all the way, its a sweet little gun, one of my fave plinkers, and while a .22 mag wouldn't be my first choice to fend off atackers, it barks loud enough and definatly would get the point across. i'd also recomend winchester supreme hps, nice hot rnd, at least as far as i can tell from popin woodchucks with em.

I own a Single Six and it actually shoots much better with the 22lr cylinder. Have not had any decent accuracy using the 22 Mag cylinder. But I'm glad it is that way since I bought it with the intention of using mostly 22lr.

I also love my Single-Six. I currently have the 5.5" barrel in stainless with adjustable sights.

I am considering buying another Single-Six: a blued model with fixed sights (so that it has the Vaquero look). I like the looks of fixed sight single actions better than adjustable sight ones.

Of course, for plinking adjustable sights are better.

Does anyone know about a double action .22 LR / .22 WMR revolver?

Accuracy under 10 yards with the .22 Magnum isnt that important, defending yourself over that distance with a firearm is looking for a criminal case against you.

Thanks for the responses so far

I have one of the S&W 48's with both cylinders, also came with an additional target hammer and trigger. Older gun, pinned barrel, excellent blue job.

Shoots great with either cylinder. It's double action. However, no longer produced and may be hard to find and pricey.

Good Luck!

Another question regarding .22 revolvers - will the velocity achieved differ much between a 2 inch, 4 inch and 5 inch barrel?

Thanks

Any DA .22 LR+WMR on the market?

Any double-action revolvers on the market that accept 22lr & wmr?

With the SA single-six, it accepts 22S, 22L, 22LR and 22WMR (other cylinder) right?

Check around for Uberti 22s. They did make a nice 22 lr/22 Magnum dual cylinder revolver. Tuarus makes a nice 22 revolver series.

"Another question regarding .22 revolvers - will the velocity achieved differ much between a 2 inch, 4 inch and 5 inch barrel?"

Yes. Most .22 LR ammo will achieve max velocity out of a 16"-18" barrel. Anything much longer or shorter robs velocity. How much is lost depends on more a bunch of things. However to give you an idea, CCI stingers rated @ 1640 fps from a rifle will only deliver about 990 fps out of a 2.5" barrel . ( I tested some out of my Beretta 21A reciently) The shorter barrels REALLY rob velocity expodentially. ( i.e an inch defference between a 2 and 3" barrel will effect velocity allot more than 14-15" difference. To make matters worse, the energy in the bullet increases/decreases with the square of the velcity, even a minor velocity drop can be significant. It's the main reason that most hunting handguns have longer barrels.

This one will shoot sub one inch bench groups at 25 yards with most Long Rifles and several of the .22 magnum loads.

Now that's weird - can anyone explain that?

When I get my first rimfire revolver (very soon), I plan on it being a dedicated .22lr only (which is unfortunate, because the Heritage has a nice price and is locally available). But I'm very skeptical of the accuracy potential of a .22lr in a .22mag-sized barrel.

Also, I believe .22lr hi-vel maxes it's velocity at around 14-16" of bbl length, whereas .22lr standard (target) loads maxes vels at 12-14" of bbl length. A .22WMR, OTOH, maxes out at about 18.5" of bbl length, according to the man in the know at rimfirecentral.

mec:

That is one lonnnng single six. Ya dont have to shoot, just poke 'em with the muzzle, right ? ? ? ;) ;) ;)

(I have the 4-5/8" barrel model...a 'snubby' compared to yours :D

I had a Stainless Steel Ruger Single Six with the long barrel. The .22 LR cylinder shot just fine. The .22 Magnum was more that slightly ammo picky. Fortunately it loved CCIs, off the bench into an inch at 25 yards (measured)

Who traded it on a 514T Stainless steel Bull Barrel 5.5" Ruger Mk II, even up with a Ruger Mk I blue.
