.22 LR Ammo at Wally World

I was picking up a few things at our local Wally World today. I walked by the Sports Department just to see if they had any .22 LR ammo. They didn't but I saw the price for it in the display. A 500 round box of Winchester was $19.95 but is now listed at $49.95. So, it looks like they are going for the high dollar just like the on line sellers.

I'm glad I have a supply and don't need any right now.

It makes me sick but I knew it was coming. What is that about 10cents a shot?

I guess I will be checking the shelves at Walmart for prices in my area as well.
 
I have always kept a supply of all the ammo and reloading supplies I use on hand. First, I use it, and second, I knew this sort of thing would happen at some point. The supply will probably be available again in a few months but the price will probably never be as low as it was. The same thing happens when the price of gas goes up. It never comes back down to where it was.

MBI, you must have been looking at the wrong ammo price, it is still below $20 at our Wally World when they have it, you just have hit it at the right time.

I'm not up to speed on this but is this the going rate on .22LR. Last Saturday, I visited a couple of chain stores and all I found was two boxes of .22WMR for $19.00 ea. Where is this thing going !! ... :eek:

I think I'll put together a little "Ammo Museum" in my house so I can visit it once in a while and reminisce about the good old days when WWB 100 round boxes of 9mm were $12.99 and Federal 550 round bulk packs of .22lr were $11.99. And, that was just six years ago.
 
I could have seen the wrong price........I have been wrong before! I'll look again the next time I'm there. I know it said $49.95 and was in the .22 section.

I remember the 9 mm 100 round boxes for $12.99. I still have a couple left. My Luger shot that very well. These days, I shoot cast lead hand loads.

I'm pretty sure I still have some 9mm squirreled away that says $5.99 on the box. Just wondering,does that make me a geezer or a hoarder?
 
At one time .22 Short was very popular and cheaper than Longs or Long Rifle. Very accurate, much quieter that Longs or Long Rifle and safer around the barn yard and such.. As a kid I used .22 Short to shoot blackbirds and sparrows out of the Cherry trees. I could see no need to use the more expensive LR for small targets. The shorts also worked very well on pigeons and chipmunks. I saved the Long Rifle for the really big game , such as raccoons, woodchucks ( ground hogs ), big tree rats and feral dogs who attacked our sheep and of course feral cats.
 
The OP is putting out false information. I have several relatives who are managers at Walmart and they do not just jack up prices when they feel like it. Their prices are based on the MSRP, nothing else.
 
If somehow it were to happen, such a price might have a good benefit. It might inhibit those who bought ammo cheap, in order to resell it.

When the ammo bubble starts to deflate, it will probably panic some of the actual scalpers who held it for too long (or could not sell).
When they finally get 'anxious', they won't buy any more and it will be much more available.

In July 2009, a single seller in Keene NH listed over 45,000 rds. of Russian 7.62x39 on Gunbroker, all at the same time.
I can't wait until these guys start to worry about their investments and greedy behavior.
 
That $49 box is the one thousand count box... Still not any sort of good price though... More per shot than buying two 555 count boxes...

I'd agree that is probably a wrong price on the 22lr. I frequently find items at Walmart placed in the wrong shelf where the wrong price is listed.

But hey, who knows these days...
 
Got a call last night from a friend that Wal-Mart had ammo! Went over and got my 3 boxes. I was told by the associate that only a member of management could open the ammo cabinet and he was not allowed to discuss why. Strange days.
 
This thread may present a very good opportunity to discuss the origin of the .22 panic.

I remember a mention made a while back about the time the panic started of a rumor going around that ammo makers were going to stop production of 22 long rifle because it was too expensive to produce.

Obviously fictitious as if that were the case than they can stop producing 12 guage shotshells as well.

I wonder if this was the origin of the 22 panic.

At ten cents around it is still the cheapest. Who doesn't own a 22lr? Nothing more to it than that.
