.22 LR accuracy question

What kind of accuracy are we getting these days out of .22LR in rifles? I usually get 2 MOA or better out of a few specific brands of high-velocity solids.

Anyone notice any difference between 40-gr solids and the hollow-points?

For a point of reference, I consider "excellent" .22 LR accuracy to be 1 MOA or less. Eley and RWS ammo do this for me all the time. When Winchester made true match ammo, theirs also did that well.

Other than trigger, my 10/22 is unmodified. The only ammo, so far, that does better than one MOA is QuickShock.

I've noticed no difference, generally, between many brands for one to two MOA. None at all between solids and HP.

Until you get out far enough where wind is a noticeable factor, say beyond 75 yards or so, a lot of combinations seem to be shooting inside one MOA. Just takes some trying, to find the right combination...

I think one would have to know the distance the accuracy is intened for. Then the type of ammo could be determined with a marrying situation of ammo to rifle.

Wouldn't that also depend...

on what you're launching those from?

If you have something with a good, reputable barrel, even stuff like PMC Scoremaster will go sub-MOA at 50 yards. Same goes for Winchester T22, and the Remington target fodder, I've done it in my heavy-barreled FrankenRuger. Heck, I'll wager that you could feed an Anschutz stuff like CCI Stingers and it would put them into sub-MOA groups. If somebody would be so kind as to send me an Anschutz to test, I'll gladly provide all the ammo, and do my best to run the rifle through it's paces for the sake of ammo accuracy testing!

;)

I believe it all depends on what ammo you're using, and in what rifle. If you're shooting a factory 10/.22, you should be able to pull off 3 or 4 MOA. Sometimes you get lucky and do better.

A good bolt rifle should shoot 2 MOA or better, fed the right ammo.

You never know whether a certain load works well or not unless you try it. Sometimes budget ammo works surprisingly well. I have found American Eagle .22 LRHP to be pretty darned good in my .22 rifles (MOA or better!).

As far as knockdown goes with a rimfire, other than the hyper-velocity rounds (which generally aren't all that accurate), the Super-X Power Point is devistating and accurate, and the CCI Mini-Mag is effective and reasonably accurate. But the AE .22 HP is certainly adequate for any duty for which a rimfire rifle is ethically suited.

Of course, this is all my opinion, but I've helped many a jackrabbit fullfil its destiny.

In my 10/22 I use only Rem standard velocity. At 30 yds I can eat a 1/2" hole in the bull all day. I now have the heavy barrel, but it was shooting like this even before I got it.

In both an Anschutz medium-heavy barrel and in two Mossberg target guns, CCI Stingers never did better than 2 MOA (usually 3). Remington Yellow Jacket was by far the worst, in the same Anschutz and a Remington 513T--4 MOA in both solids and HPs!

I've just never tested the hollowpoints against their solid counterparts.

Favorite "regular" ammo for cheap and usually good enough accuracy have been Win T22, Fed target, Win Super-X and CCI Mini-Mags. None of these ever did worse than 2 MOA, which will hold an NRA 10-ring. IIRC, most were 1 to 1.5 MOA--usually 1.25 or a bit bigger. But all I ever used were solids.

I've got a 10/22 stainless, target barrel. I mostly shoot CCI stingers, at 40 yds I'll cut a hole around 1" sometimes less in the bullseye. With PMC zappers I'll shoot 1/2" hole, but it's 2 inches low of bullseye. I use it to hunt squirrels so I just stick with the stingers instead of resighting for the zappers.

I never stop being amazed by the difference that can be made in point of impact by simply changing bullets.

My 10/22T tuned by CPC, shot a 5 shot group at 50 yards measuring 0.20" c-c using RWS Target ammo. I normally feed it Win. Dynapoints which averages 0.40" 10 shot groups. Win Power Points will avg 0.5" 10 shot groups. I also shot some sub-moa groups at 100 yards with the Dynapoints. It just takes forever to reach the target. My gun also hates expensive ammo. One time I fed it Federal Ultra Match at $13/50 rounds, it decided to jam every round and shot a 1.75" group at 50 yards.

Dynapoints? All I know from Winchester is the wildcat cheap stuff, Super-X, T-22 and the old Mark III and Mark IV match stuff.

Am I missing out on an expanded product line?
