.22 conversion for 1911 or new .22 pistol?

Hi everybody

I am looking at getting a .22 pistol to just fire occasionally for target practice and trigger control.

I looked at a Ruger 5in. bull barrel .22 and I saw a conversion kit in Wilson's catalog to put on your frame for a 1911. Which is what I carry.

I wondering which route I should take?
The advantages of getting the Ruger that I came up with is:

1. Getting a new gun

the advantage with a conversion kit .22 for the 1911 that I came up with is:

1. Same platform, I'd still be getting my reps in on basically the same gun that I carry.

2. The trigger pull and feel will stay the same.

Any others for either the Ruger or the Conversion?

I don't think I would need to fill out any paperwork for the conversion so that could be another advantage.

Does anyone know of the disadvantages of either?

I'd appreciate advice on what you guys think and know.

Thanks
Ross T.

Having come from Wilsons, and have been using his parts for years(THIS IS NOT A PLUG GUYS!) I have a 22 conver. that I bought before I went there and love It! I am a distr. of KG Products and decided to try it on my conver. unit because there was a lot of "feeding probs" and I am at 2217 round swithout cleaning the unit, and only have oiled It twice. Not one ftf or other prob.Plus Its on my main carry gun, It's nice to be able to go back and forth.Hope I have helped you.SC
quote:
Originally posted by ROSANGHAL:

FWIW, I have not seen any conversion unit that is as accurate as a bull-barrel Ruger. The other pros and cons have already been discussed.

Either choice would likely be OK.

Advantages of getting a Ruger:
- Ability to use a wide range of .22 ammo
- Cheaper magazines ($13 versus $30)
- Better accuracy
- No need to field strip the .45 to shoot .22

Advantages of getting a conversion kit:
- Better trigger pull
- Consistent grip
- Ability to practice drawing from the same holster
- Better training for use of the .45

I'm not sure that shooting a .22 will improve your trigger control on another gun that has a fundamentally different feel.

If you want to practice and become more effective with your .45, then getting a .22 conversion will allow you to practice more, cost effectively. And your trigger control can improve.

If you want an accurate .22 pistol just for plinking, then buying a separate gun makes more sense -- but so does a conversion unit.

(I've talked with several guys, now, who have Ciener .22 slides, and they've been VERY happy with the accuracy --they feel that they're at least as good as any .22 they could buy for a comparable $ outlay.)

Personally, I've got several .22 pistols, AND a 1911...

I have a ciener platinum cup I use on my kimber. It' accurate and very reliable but if you shoot thumbs forward you have to watch you don't drag your thumb on the slide. It will make it malfunction. I'm also pretty sure they make Wilson's and Kimber's conversion units. Also the ciener platinum cup comes with Millet adjustable sights so you dial it in to shoot to the same point as your .45. I think there still $250 which is $50 less than the comparable kimber unit. I'm not sure what the Wilson ones go for.

Thanks for the replies guys

What I meant to say on my 1st post about the trigger control was from time to time I'll shoot right on. Other days I'll have a consistent flinch that I notice a nice group slightly lower than where I was aiming. Put a snap cap in and rack press, press, press click flinch. There it is. I figured along with a training buddys advice was to practice on a .22

Steve Clark where can I get more info on KG's conversion.

Railroader I saw the for sale post on the conversion and emailed the guy it won't fit on my officers frame. I think I saw somewhere that Wilsons has different slides to accomodate full sized frames and officers frames.

How about the balance? My understanding is the Ceiner units are aluminum. So does the 1911 feel muzzle light when the .22 conversion unit is on it?

AC., The ciener units are aluminum and they are lighter than my kimber slide and barrel but it still balances ok. I just like having the same grip and trigger. Also Rosanghal, ciener makes officer model units too I think.

Wilson Only markets a 5 inch conver. now , they will also work on a commander lenght slide- YES they will! As far as KG it is a high end cleaning, lube and gun care prod co.I give the complete sample package out upon request. If it were not for this product I probablywould have smacked mine with a hammer, I couldnt sell it and ruin my bus. name. The same prob. arises with Alum-to steel, the main thing w/ the KG is how much better my unit runs, If you buy a unit from WC have VIC fit it!.SC
quote:
Originally posted by ROSANGHAL:
