.22 CBees Anyone?

It seems the Remington .22 CBees have been discontinued.

That is a damn shame because for me they were nearly ideal for my purposes i.e. short range pest control and plinking in a suburban environment containing nosy neighbors...

In my rifle, they made far less noise than my tuned Sheridan .20 and packed twice the wallop-- the report more like a sound suppressed .22

So, are the CCI CBees just as quiet? Can't seem to find those either but I understand they are still made... Maybe I'll have to send away for a brick... Having seached past threads, the Aguila sounds too weak for pest control and may be more suited to indoor target/bullet traps...

CCI CBees better, less, or equal to Remington CBees?

Debee,

No, the CCI are not as quiet. They are about 100-150 fps faster than the Remingtons. You might give the Aguilla Super Colibri a try. At 575 fps they are very close to the 600 fps or so of the Remingtons. Or, if you can find some, Eley Z.

Good Hunting!

I have had great luck with the hummingbirds. As well, try their 60 grain .22lr bullet through a suppressed rifle. Hits hard and is magic on cats, squirrels, coons, etc. And the neighbors are none the wiser.

I tried some of the Aquilla Colibri this weekend. Super quiet. A head shot at 10feet dropped a feral cat.

Does the Super Colibri have just a little powder or a stronger primer?

Aguila SSS

BTW, has anyone tried Aguila's SSS (Sniper SubSonics?) How are they? What about accuracy? 60 Gr....thats incredibly heavy for a .22 bullet---let me know.....

Blinme7182, that's the 60 grain bullet I waz referring to. Do just great in suppressed 77/22. Apparently the Ruger's twist is tight enough to stabilize this heavy a bullet (don't tell Bill--he'll probably say it's "not sporting"--oh, the children). Have friend who shoots cats with an NEF (yes! an NEF) single shot raffle in .22 with SSSs through a suppressor. He reports that it is like shooting pumpkins with CBs. You just hear the "plunk."

I don't see a lot of difference between the CCI and the Remington, but then again I am firing them out of a 24 inch barrel. Even shorts are relativly quiet out of this length barrel.
I don't have my records handy right now but I seem to remember CCI CB Shorts chronygraphing at 625-650 at 5 feet from the muzzle.........again this was a 24 inch barrel. It is claimed by some that for a 22 LR a 16 inch barrel is optimal. Maybe with a 24 inch barrel and a CB Cap there is a considerable velocity loss from a 24 incher.
JB in SC that 100-150 FPS difference is that from a Chrony or from factory propoganda?

Blink, I read somewhere that ths SSS ammo was exceptionally accurate wven whae the bullet tumbled. If I find it again, I'll post a link.

Freeman, where did he get that suppressed NEF barrel? I have been thinking about getting one, for a papoose, but this sounds interesting also. Thanks

Southla1,

My 35 year old Browning .22 Auto (19" BBL) chronographed (an Oehler) the Remington CBees @ 620 fps, the CCI @ 730 fps (short versions). This has been some years ago (so I certainly could be mistaken on those numbers), but I had originally thought they would be identical. Much quieter with the CBees out of my rifle, so I checked them with my friend's chronograph. I still have some of the CBees around and will check them again. I usually keep the Browning loaded with 5 of the CBee longs in the magazine (for grey squirrels). Of course they have to be hand cycled, but work fine for me. The Colibris I've tried in my old Stevens Bolt (just in case they get stuck in the bore), they seem to work alright for ground squirrels within 15 feet or so. I've also used the older conical and bb type rounds in the Stevens, but the extraction is terrible.

Regards,
JB

I have heard and confirmed by experience

that CCI CB "shorts" are louder than the CB Longs, I don't know why, they just are. This is out of a 6-7/8" barrel Ruger MkII.

I tried some (CB Shorts) in my 6" High Standard Tournament pistol and they were almost as loud as a LR. The only thing missing was the "sonic crack". Out of a 24" rifle barrel they are as quiet as a whisper.

Blinkme7182, is the Marlin's spin tight enough for a 60 grain bullet? got me; I'm not a gun rag writer (I admit my lack of knowledge and I don't even own a flowered shirt). but that's the fun of being a "gun nut." you get to do experiments (don't forget your white lab coat and black glasses).

Scouter27, it's not a NEF integeral suppressed barrel, but a separate unit (it's black so its tactical). He uses it on various .223s and .22lrs. just take your NEF to your friendly neighborhood tool & die man, send your Money Order to the T-men, and then get your Form 4 signed by a CLEO and you are on your way to undisturbed plinking (oh, the children).
