.22 cal Ammo - accuracy?

I've always bought the Wal-Mart stocked brands (ie .22 viper or Federal). I've noticed when I get my NRA mag and they list tested ammo groupings, that PMC has the smallest grouping. I saw some PMC in .22 cal yesterday and was wondering if that is the way to go for great accuracy. I've never shot Winchester .22, but have heard they are very good.

PMC: good? bad? ugly? do I trade accurate range for this great accuracy (don't need much past 50 yds)

Same for Winchester.

Also, heard Winchester .22 mag is great, where as I've alway used CCI .22 mag - again Wal-Mart. Opnions?

Thanks.

I think you had better test the differrent brands in your guns. What is a fine ammo in one gun will not work well in a different one.The only sure way is do your own testing.

Every pistol is ammo sensitive to some degree and you need to test as many kinds of ammo as possible to get the best accuracy -- and then if one is remarkably better buy several cases of it for that particular gun. Even the same ammo changes over time as machinery wears and different batches of powder are purchased etc.

The most ammo sensitive guns are usually .22 caliber in my experience. Buy lots of kinds of ammo -- try each one under test style conditions -- and expecially with .22 ammo go back and buy all you possibly can of the winning ammo.

Currently the most accurate ammo I can find for several of my pistols and rifles is QuickShock which is made by blount also known as CCI -- the Stinger folks.

.22s are very ammo sensitive! Find a box that shoots good in your gun and try to buy same ammo from the same lot#. There is a difference.

The only PMC .22 ammo i have used is the Zipper. I tried it in a Ceiner conversion for a 1911. I think it was the worst i have used for 22's.
I really like the remington golden bullet that comes in 550 round boxes at walmart for 9 bucks. It seems pretty accurate and very reliable and for the price i think it is about the best i have found. I have used others like the CCI that are a bit more accurate but are not as cost effective.

I'll never forget the time I saw a tracer round weave back and forth after leaving the barrel of my 10/22. With Federal or Remington it shoots straight as an arrow.

I have always had good luck with the Golden Bullet Hi-Vel Rem in my .22s. Some do only ok on the stuff but they still feed great without jams. The price is good and it shoots fantastic in my old Savage target bolt gun and also in my Hi-Standard HD Military. The other .22s dont do as good but feed the stuff fine. I could hunt and test ammo in the others but they will never come close to my old .22s so why bother. :) Most .22s dont shoot for squat now unless you spend some big bucks anyway. :) :)

I've found that PMC Scoremaster is good ammo, though it won't function reliably in some semiauto pistols. It's more expensive than the bulk-packed stuff at Wal-Mart, but then so is just about everything. ;)

While we're talking .22lr, what do you think is its ultimate reliability considering its a rimfire round?

95/100 rounds feed and shoot reliably? 98/100? What's your experiences in your guns?

My Ruger 22/45 fed Rem Thunderbolts reliably 99 percent of the time.

But the Browning Buckmarks and SW 422/622/22 target models jammed here and there so I would estimate they were only about 90 percent reliable.

There's some more accurate than others, but it's a gun+ammo match, not just gun or ammo alone.

I have a Ruger 10/22, and I fed it Winchesters and it hated it. Jammed every 10th shot or so. I switched to the cheapo Blazers and I got a jam only every 500. But the blazers for my friend jams every 5 shots or so.

The lesson I learned is, guns have different diets, find one that your gun is happy to digest and that's the best ammo.

Keep in mind that accuracy is pointless if it jams every other shot.

Shoot safe,

I have always found CCI Minimag solids to be very reliable in all my 22lr firearms. Accuracy is some where between good to excellent depending on the particular firearm.

I have noticed that with 22lr ammo, solid round nose bullets seems to be much more accurate than hollowpoints or truncated style. Anybody else have this experience? Anybody know why?

taco,

My guess is that the more aerodynamic shape is more stable in flight, especially at trans-sonic speed.

BTW, the higher grade of ammo ("match grade") are supposed to be loaded more consistently so as to improve accuracy from shot to shot.
