.22-250

I need some input for the .22-250 varmit shooters out there. At 150-200 yards, what would be the largest game/varmit I can be effective against?

About any varmint you can hit. I shot one of my first whitetail with my 22-250
did a fine job on him! It's a good cartridge, coyotes, fox, prarie dogs, whatever it will do the job. Both of mine are good shooters.:D

A person that I sometimes hunt with uses them on WT deer at that range with a 22-250. None of the deer went anywhere as they have all been neck shots. Not sure I would go much further than 200 yards with it for deer.

I just got a Savage 12FV in 22-250 yesterday at the local shop as they were having a 20% off all rifles in stock.

It will take a coyote and smaller at that distance with ease, to say the least. It is not the choice for most as a deer rifle, but with a well placed shot, it is able to take deer sized game, just not recommended, since an ill placed shot could allow the deer to travel a long way with the damage being limited to a 22 caliber bullet. IF you did hunt a deer with it, you should go to the 60+ grain bullets. They need a faster twist to stabilize, though.

Today's bullet technpology makes the hotshot .22s suitable for deer, but I think there is one definite limitation: Don't take an angling shot where you have to go through meat before hitting the heart/lungs. Quartering away, for instance. Neck shots or ninety-degree cross-body works okay.

Figure coyotes to 300 yards, easily...

You are good out to 200 yards for whitetail sized game. Deer in the weight range up to 200 pounds are regularly taken with the 22-250 around here. If you were to try it for deer, I would use at least 55gr soft points. You can use up to 60gr, maybe 62gr(my experience),with most standard twist barrels but any thing heaver will do best with a tighter twist such as a 1:9 twist. Soft points tend to work best for the larger game (Hog, Coyote, and Deer). As stated before shot placement is critical to a fast kill, but not so different from where (Heart, Lung, Neck, Spine, and Head) any other caliber should be placed.
