22-250 Load Help

I will be buying a Savage model 12 LRPV soon in 22-250. Does anyone want to make loading suggestions of powder and bullet combinations. I will be using Lapua brass and Federal 210M primers. I will be shooting at 100 yds. Thanks for any help.

Many powders shoot very very well in the 22-250. Old reliables off the top of my head are H380, Win 760, Varget, IMR 4320. There are many more that will perform well. Alliant has great 22-250 powders too I've just never used them. Look at a couple of loading manuals and see what powders are available local to you and go from there.

A Savage Model 12 LRPV with which twist? Comes with 1 in 9 or 1 in 12. The former will stabilise heavy bullets better.
There are hordes of suitable powders. Partial to IMR4064 for just about everything myself.

Here are my two favorite loads:

40 Nosler
36.5 TAC
CCI 200
COAL 2.35 4,019 avg/25.2 std "One hole" group

55 Sierra HPBT
36.5 IMR-4320
CCI 200
COAL 2.32 3,675 avg/33 std 5/8" group

Both from a Remington 700 VS 26" bbl.

Through the weekend of July 4th, Model 12 LPV in .22-250 with a 1:12 twist data for a compilation of group sizes for 57 different loads and 152 groups using a variety of seating depths is as follows:

Reloader 15
53 grain Sierra Match King # 1400 bullets averaged 0.365 for 35 groups (best load was 0.201).
52 grain Berger # 22408 bullets averaged 0.407 for 58 groups (best load was 0.232).

N140
52 grain Berger # 22408 bullets averaged 0.411 for 46 groups (best load was 0.202).
52 grain Nosler # 53234 bullets averaged 0.559 for 13 groups (best load was 0.490).

The top 25 loads averaged 0.314 for 66 groups.

My one and only 22-250 load. 34.0 grains of IMR 4895, 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. Every rifle is different though. I think I stole that load from the Nosler Manual and a comment by Rick Jameson I think.

I shot a lot of coyotes with my old 22/250 using a max charge of IMR4895, CCI primers , and Hornady 53 grain flatbase match bullets.

not going to get the highest possible velocity, but 4064 is a great powder for the heavier weight bullets. it is the reccomended accuracy powder in several manual, plus it's usually easy to get a hold of.

i don't have a 22-250, but i was just researching it the other night to see if it's something that i would be interested in. it seems like a pretty great cartridge and works with most of the components i already keep on hand, i would like to get a bolt gun in 250 some day. you'll just have to try a few to see what works best for you though

1stmars suggestion of 36 grains 4064 under a 52/3 grain bullet makes sense. Never loaded for .22-250 but load for 220 swift which is a tad bigger and I found 38.5 gr 4064 under a 55 grain Nosler varmageddon tipped works great in that cartridge. DO NOT buy the Hornady 53 gr vmax if you go with that weight. It's too long and lacking in bearing surface and won't stabilize in the slow twists standard for .22-250 or .220 swift.

for my Weatherby S2- 35.6 grs Varget 55 gr vmax .5" groups at 100 and hit a 6" square steel at 300 holding at the top of the plate..

55 vmax works fine in those twists, the 53 vmax is longer and lacks bearing surface. Stability has as much if not more to do with length than weight.
