22-250 1:8 twist barrel

I was looking at buying a heavy barrel chambered in 22-250 for a mauser action. Midway has heavy barrel/laminate stock combo that has a 1:8 twist barrel. Isn't this a little too much rotation for a 4000 fps bullet with a thin jacket for varminting?! The way I have it figured, velocity would have to be kept way low. The other thought I have is that this barrel is made to stabilize the 60-70 gr .223 bullets. What do you all think?

Have a Bud that runs 80 grain Sierra's @ approx 3100 fps........TACK DRIVER.....molied.
Believe a 1-8,you are correct this twist is for the heavier bullets, but I would think also do well on all but the sub 55's.............maybe 52's.

That barrel is definitely for the heavier bullets. I doubt that you would have much success with a true varmint bullet loaded to capacity. For example, if you tried to shoot Speer's TNT's with it, you would have the varmint wondering what all that dust was you just flung at him.

Let's say you load a 55 gr. bullet for a good solid 3600 fps. The bullet would be rotating around 324,000 rpm's. I think that is really pushing the limit of a bullets integrity.

I would not recommend pushing anyting lighter than a 62 grain bullet.

You can drive a 55 grain moly coated to 3700fps, but the accuracy is not all that great.

Going with heavier bullets defies conventional logic when shooting the 22-250, everyone buys it for speed but the fast twist barrel is made for shooting heavy bullets slowly and accurately at great distances.

What you'll have when you get finished, IF you hand load, is a rifle capable of head shots on a jackrabbit at 800 to 1000 yards. Trust me on this tidbit of information....:)

I suppose what I will do then is just buy the barrel and stock separately. Since I like shooting the zippy 50, 52, and 55 grainers I will stick with the 1:14 brl. Thanks for y'alls info!
