204 Ruger , CFE223?

I loaded some 40gr V-Max's with 28.3gr and 28.8gr of CFE223, CCI 400 primers and when I fired them they put out a puff of smoke at the muzzle of the barrel and seems like the inside of barrel is very dirty after shooting them. Anyone have any experience with CFE223 in a 204 Ruger?

Sounds like low pressure. Assuming the case was dry and the powder was in good shape, can you measure what velocity you got out of it? You might also try a #450 magnum primer if its an ignition issue.
