2011 S&W "Classic" 57 Bluing discoloring after 50 rounds?

Purchased an S&W model 57 "Classic" series, factory test fired in July of 2011, today. It was a real good price even with the issue. Previous owner purchased it 3 months ago and swears he only has 50 rounds through it even though the barrel has what looks like a foggy coating on it. Do these newer Smiths have that bad of Q/C or do you think it's caused by some sort of solvent or other factor? Took this picture with my cell phone at the FFL and won't be able to take more for 10 days when I pick it up. Looks like a lot of reflections, but it's more of a blue camo. look if that makes sense.

I've never seen bluing worn like that before, so my guess would be that it was caused by either some sort of cleaning agent or, possibly, by being stored in something that retains moisture (storing guns in leather holsters, for example, is bad ju ju as it's very hard on bluing). A little Renaissance Pre-Lim might be able to clean it up, but as you've apparently only got 10 days to accept or return the gun, you might not have time to order that and see if it works.

Something else you might try is a small dab of car polishing compound (not rubbing compound as that's far too abrasive) in an inconspicuous area to see if the discoloration can be removed. Go very, very lightly though as abrasives, even mild ones, can remove bluing if you're too aggressive with them.

If you remove or damage even the tiniest amount of bluing with any polishes,...you own it.

What you may be seeing is dried old lubricant or wax.

I'd recommend gently wiping the surface with a patch with a little CLP Breakfree on it.
If that doesn't clear it up, it's not likely it can be.
In that case, return it to the seller and get your money back, or negotiate a price reduction.

Spoke to the seller again and he claims it came to him new from a BIG online seller that way. Since he had planned on hunting with it and using it a lot, as well as the hastle involved with returning it, he just kept it. It does seem a little fishy so I'll just wait 'til I get it after the 10 day CA wait and see what I can do about it. Got it with a Galco leather holster, pachmyer rubber and factory wood grips, dies, 450 brass and bullets for 600 so if it shoots well I'll still be happy. Of course if I can make it LOOK halfway decent I'll be REAL happy!

Do as Dfaris suggested and see if it improves the look of the finish. Even if it is still blued camo, I think you came out okay.

Post some more pictures when you finally get to take it home and give it some attention.
