20 MOA rail on my savage mod 10 in 308 win

i got a new savage mod 10 with accu trigger, in 308 win with the factory 3-9x40 scope, however i got a 20 moa rail, for below cost, i got a tasco 8-32x42 ao scope for free, and was wondering how to properly mount the two together for an accurate gun. Currently i am cutting three shot groups under .75" at one hundred yards with my current set up

Savage 10 FCP, optic, rings, and a 20 MOA rail.

What part of this do you have a question about?

my questin primarily is what type of rings should i consider using, i was told that my rail will accept the traditional weaver style rings, but was told that i would be better off investing in to a set of tactical style rings. now its got me confused and left wandering which is the correct way to set up this gun.

Let's start with who made the rail? What is the brand? What are the specs on it?

For example, I use an EGW (Evolution Gun Works) 20 MOA rail. According to the specs from EGW, it works with rings designed for a Picatinny or Weaver rail. I use Burris XTR Xtreme rings and these are designed to work on both a Picatinny or Weaver rail. The rings come in three heights so that you can accommodate mounting optics with different sized objective lens. Since scopes are commonly manufactured with 1" or 30mm diameter tubes, the rings are available to fit either dimension. The objective lens size along with the barrel contour usually determine what height ring to get.

I'd start by throwing that Tasco in the trash or at best trying to get $10.00 for it on craigslist. Why would you invest in a quality base and set of rings with a POS scope to go on it?

ok here we go the rail is made by weaver, it says right on the package savage 10 SA accu 20 moa, extended multi slot, it has a model number 99496. other than that it doesnt say much, and the tasco scope has not done me wrong, it has been on everything from my .243 win all the way upto my 300 win mag and never lost its zero even after being dropped and slid into a beaver pond in central pennsylvania.

I just looked up your Weaver rail. It is suppose to work with either Weaver or Picatinny style rings, so you are good to go there.

When you pick out your rings, be sure to get the appropriate scope tube size. As I mentioned earlier, you most likely have a 1" or 30mm diameter scope tube.

Performance will be best if you are able to mount your scope as low as possible in relationship to the barrel. If you look at my photo above, it looks like the scope may be actually touching the end of the rail. It is not....just the camera angle makes it appear so. There is about 1/16" clearance between the end of the rail and the scope.

I run a pair of low clearance rings on my Savage....they are 1/2" high. Not all ring manufacturers use the same relationship....on some, a low ring might be 3/8" or 5/8". If you search around the internet a bit, you can find the formula to compute your ring height. Once you do, you are good to go as far as ordering your rings.

FWIW....I have an old Tasco scope I bought back in the 70s. I still have it and recently removed it from my Remington 788 .223 rifle. It has always worked and because of that, I won't throw it in the trash. Is it as good as the Vortex Viper PST I have on my Savage or the Bushnell 4200 Elite I run on my FNAR? No...but then again, I paid less than 1/10 the price for it compared to the others. Shoot it until you find a reason not to. ;)
