20 gauge 870 wingmater info wanted

hey i got a used 870 wingmaster in 20 gauge for christmas this year-it only uses 2 3/4 inch shells and the serial number it shows right below the "Remington" is 70369X(X) there was an X at the end of hte number and dont know what thats for?-the X behind the 9 is so nobody knows the exact # ;)-i dunno what that last 1 is for-any information on this 1-where it was made by any chance?-when?it has the forarm where it has the ridges-not the checkerd-

Thanks in advance-Joseph

Congrats, Joe, you hit the jackpot. I can't get to my book now, but I'll check tomorrow and see when it was made. I'll need the 2 letter code, not the serial # to do so.

And don't worry about only being able to use the short shells, what you have is no waterfowler anyway, but a thoroughly delightful upland gun. Enjoy...

ok

what is the 2 letter code?-i havent been around firearms ALOT-shot em several times just not owned em-thanks-and where do i find it-what will it look like-in a circle by itself etc etc-and thanks for the help

these are what i found on the gun-i just looked :)

PG& on the one side of the gun close to the action-on the barrel

and i also found a REP in an oval sort of shape-
/\
M in a house sort of shaped figure |M| sorta like that ;)
Joseph ---

hope this helps-thanks again!

ok

btw i know it can only hold 2 3/4-it doesnt matter to me-i got it mainly for a shotgun shooting sports program for practice and meets and for hunting-i wont be needing 3 inchers for any of my uses because i will be getting a 12 within 2-3 years at least :)-i'll probbaly want an 870 12 gauge-wingmaster maybe-depends on cash-all the posibilities and upgrades :)

Joe, the X indicates that it's a full size 20 ga frame.

Big Green reused letter codes several times. Your's was made in June, 1960 by the code.

HTH....

thanks :)

hey thanks :)-really appreciate it!and does hte full size frame mean its hte same as the 12 gauge?just different parts-i dunno :)-hey i was at the range today-got a box of Federal Heavy Field Loads in 8 shot and 1 oz and a box of AA target loads in 9 shot and 7/8 oz

i was deciding on which of these to use for competition-when i was shooting the federal i dusted them-literally tehre was almost NOTHING left of them-little tiny bits-with the AA i had big enoguh chuncks i shot em twice a few times ;) :D

i missed about 2-3 tops out of about 40 i shot-brother shot some-and because of something else-will say now

ok it happened to me one time with both loads-i had 1 in the chamber and loaded another into the magazine-so i had 3 in my gun the whole time-and i dont know if i am just not getting the shell in a TINY bit to short or what because it came out and got stuck under the part that pulls the shell up to put into the chamber after the 1st shot-whats this called?- i got it out the first time-the shell in the chamber was shot-and i just pushed on the botton thati releases the slide-hard-and then pulled on the slide HARD and alot-and i got it so it popped out-is the spring too strong and i need to take out a little coil or something or a new 1? or should i just make sure i get it all the way in?-the second one was stuck in a little farther and am working on it now-i just got it out :)-i had to hit it on the ground-i was gonna do that out there but it was geting dark out and we were gonna leave soon anyway-i am going back tomororw-i will pick up al my shells-specialyl those AA-;)-and the others that are lying around-found a live .410 aerlier-and maybe shoot some more :)-i love these fedearl heavy loads-and with the 1 ounce shot has more bang for the buck-is cheaper than the AA and shoots like a DREAM out of my gun-and the bigger shot has more range-

i was shooting these little CCI really flat clay pigeons-THOSE ARE HARD until u get the hang of it-i think i am gonna use these federal loads-i love em!-cheaper-more shot-and bigger for longer shots:)

thanks again for all that information-:)-really cool that my guns that old :)-my mom's jealous its younger :-p lol

You have to make sure to push the shell in until it "Clicks" past the shellcatchers,Joe. When no crisis is in progress, rectify a malf by removing the mag cap, and clearing out the mag all the way until the shell(s) falls out and reassemble.

I think the full size 20 ga frame is not the same as the 12, since they have different suffixes after the serial number.

Enjoy, sounds like a keeper...

ok

i figured i was doing it a bit wrong :)-it just happend a few times and i knew what the problem was just i didnt know if i needed to work on it or the spring was a litlte too strong-thanks for all ur help :)-i figured about the frame thing-since all 870 things are interchangable :)-most ;)-bye-hey btw can u put a 12 gauge barrel onto my 20 gauge frame-and change the magazine for 12 gauge?-i think that would be alot easier than getting a 12 gauge-just get barrels n a magazine tube

I killed more game with a 20 ga 870 than Carter has little liver pills! I put a Poly choke on and had it cut to 25" overall barrel length and that one could do no wrong!

Get a stronger spring for your Remington! That will cure the prob....You might want to get a longer dowel cut to length for a two shot mag as well...That will keep you out of trouble!

Congrats!

Joe,Remington claims 870 parts are all interchangeable within GAUGE. And, mag tubes do not pop in/out.

So, no multiguage frames. No big thing, there's lots of used 12s out there(Around 6 million, IIRC) and a deal will float by eventually.Keep them peeled and you'll get one.

Meanwhile, you've a fine tool/weapon/toy in that 20.What choke is marked on the bbl?

hmm

it sais MOD in my great wisdom and deciphering codes experience i belive that means MODified :p :p :D  -i could tell it wasnt a full before i checked it at the range-it seemed to spread out hte shot more with the AA-but with the federal they grouped REALLY nice for my clays :)

The big question here is, does it break the clays at the distance I'm shooting them at?

Modified is perhaps the most versatile choke. Enjoy, you got a great present there...

k

:) it blows em apart completely at most distances if i do my part-i waited a few times and hit them farther away with no problem and still pretty much demolished them-not like those ones that u skip off the sides and change its direction ;)

Sounds close to ideal, Joe. Lots of pieces rather than a chip or smoke. We talk about smoking a target, but smoking usually means we're overdense in the center of the pattern and losing some spread.

Enjoy....
