2 Items You Should Carry

I've seen many threads listing all the stuff people carry every day in addition to their gun: extra mag, flashlight, etc. There are 2 items which are almost always missing from those lists, and which I think are among the most important tools: a recording device and your lawyer's phone number. We'll start with the lawyer; every gun school and training video will tell you to find a good lawyer before you need one, not after. I would like to recommend the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. armedcitizensnetwork.org They are based on the premise of providing you with a complete support network in the event of legal trouble, to counter-act the network of government resources that the DA will be using against you. They recommend good lawyers, and teach them how to defend innocent people. (All they learn in law school is how to defend criminals, which requires an entirely different tactic.) They also provide $$ to help with your legal defense. If you've never heard of them and are feeling skeptical, let me drop just one name on you: Massad Ayoob. He supports them and helps train their lawyers.

On the subject of recording devices, we've all heard horror stories about bad cops. You'll have a much easier time proving your allegations if you have some evidence. Thanks to modern technology, we have all sorts of options available, from smart phones to spy pens. I've played with some different ones, and will post a thread on the Gear And Accessories forum.

The lawyer, yes.

Recording device, I suppose is effective if you have opportunity to identify a situation in time to get it started. Or have one that records you 24/7/365. Is practicality an issue here?

After an incident, absolutely. Record everything you can.

Most phones now, of course, can handle this need.

Its a personal choice, but for me:

Phone
Pistol
pepper spray

The pepper spray would probably get you out of almost all encounters that you will run into, both 2 legged and 4 legged.

AND.... you dont have to spend time in court

To me the pepper spray is more importent than the 2nd mag
Almost all encounters needing a pistol end in 2-3 shots fired

If I am up against the Bolivian army, I would get the second mag...... (or maybe not go to Bolivia, if I think I need to fight an army....hint, hint)

The phone is a 100% need. If you have to discharge or even point your weapon, YOU NEED TO IMMEDIATELY CALL THE COPS

1) Pepto-Bismol® - it's 5-symtom relief - hey you can't beat that.

2) A First Aid kit for when the bad cop shoots me when I put my hand in my pocket to turn on my recording device.

All they learn in law school is how to defend criminals, which requires an entirely different tactic.

Ummmm, no. Actually, law school is a lousy place to learn to defend anyone, but that's a whole different story. I am a member of the network, and they have sent me training materials that were good.

It is probably a good idea to know which lawyer you are going to call, and if time/money/situation permits, it would be even better to have already met that lawyer. You could, but might not need to, make an appointment and go to the lawyer's office. I routinely meet people at training events and my local range and local gun stores, and I'm happy to give them my card and let them know if they ever need anything, including but not limited to after an incident, to call me. Remember, trial lawyers are always closing files and hoping for the phone to ring with a new case. If someone calls me and says, "hey, we met at the range and I've got a situation...." then I know I'm talking to someone I've met and we go from there.

Most smart phones have a voice recorder some have a video recorder, and I concur that if it is legal where you are to record any post-incident events, you should do so.

Three items I always carry, in addition to my CCW, is a Pocket Knife, Waterproof Lighter, and Flashlight.

4 things I carry

1. ID (DL. Permit)
2. Cell Phone (and Crackberry)
3. Folding knife
4. Handgun
5. Hoof knife (old habit)
6. other "stuff"

Ok I suck at math :D

In addition to the normal items, I always carry a cell phone and hopefully a big dose of common sense, which seems to be so lacking in so many these days.
