Similar event happened here in Wyoming this year - don't have too many details since it was't highly publisized and I only heard it over the radio as the G&F discussed it.
Anyway, some guy had taken his young daughter elk hunting, found a pair of bull elk in the same tangle. She shot the surviving one and the second was already dead. The G&F gave her another license since the surviving elk was in such sorry shape it's meat was wasted. No idea if she got to keep either or got another.
You hear of these things happening, but I ain't seen one yet. Maybe one day...
I'd think it's rare engough that I'm amazed there were two such events this year on the entire continent!
