2 Choices for X'mas

I'm planning to buy a new handgun for myself before the year ends. My 2 choices are a 9mm Taurus PT111 or a .45acp Smith & Wesson 457. I would appreciate all of your suggestions :) .

Greeting's Billy and A Big Welcome To TFL-

Honestly, I've never owned either. But my
personal experience with (1) Taurus revolver
taught me a lesson. I can't speak for their
semi-auto's; although reading all the thread's
here at TFL make me wonder about quality
control? Especially, the one about a Taurus
Milliniuem literally falling apart!!!

With that said, I'd definitely go for the
Smith & Wesson model 457.

Best Wishes,

Yup, there have been alot of horror stories re: Taurus pt-111 and pt 145's...do a search and see for yourself. That said, I too would go with the S&W (if those were my only choices!)

Hey Billy, Welcome to TFL. No experience with the Taurus but I owned a S&W 457 a few years ago and really liked like it. My shootin' buddy liked it also and he's real picky. We both gave it a thumbs up.
It was lightweight (alloy frame), fairly compact, reasonably
priced and I don't recall a malfunction of anykind. Nice little pistol. Good Luck, J. Parker

GOD!! Somebody shoot me, because I'm about to do something I thought I would never do!!! Buy the (choke gasp aack :barf: ) ... No, I can't bring myself to say it... Buy the other one. Not the Taurus!!!! Wheew, that was close!!!

Use the search facility and look for "Skyslash pt111" or "denfoote pt145". You'll see what the others have been telling you...

Best,

Are you SURE those are your only two choices :( ;)

Seriously,

I'm not a bit of a gun snob but I think if you post your requirments (concealed carry, home protection, range gun) you could get some suggestions of better guns in the same price range. Remember just because those are the only two guns in your dealers shelf does not mean those are your only choices (though he might like you to think so).

Given the two choices you specified, I would unhesitatingly go with the S&W 457. Owned one once and regretted selling it.

If you would like to entertain other suggestions, how about the Ruger P97? Lots of good reviews in this forum.

Given...

...those two choices, I would unhesitatingly say "457". (Although the pocket 9mm Millenium and the Commander-sized 457 make it kinda apples & oranges; I'd have a harder time choosing between the Taurus 945 and the 457... ;) )

The S&W 457 .45 semi auto pistol is a lot less likely to fall apart on you, given your choice selection. Look around there's plently of auto's in the size and price catagory. DO NOT get that taurus. Good Luck!

Smith vs Taurus

Unfortunately I live in LA, Cal. so we don't have a lot of choices. I should have bought a Kel-Tec 2 years ago but bought a Glock 19 instead 'coz I could still buy high cap mags back then here in CA :(
