2.75" barrel .357 and woods critter defense

I have a 1983 Ruger .357 Speed-six with a 2.75" barrel. 1) What kind of velocity can I expect from this particular gun with ammo of 158 grain and up? 2) Up to what size woods critters could I effectively defend myself with a revolver of the mentioned specs? 3) What ammo would be best for defense in the woods?

Thanks

1. I'm guessing around 1,300 ft/sec.
2. In the southern US? Pretty much whatever you run across.
3. Probably, a 158-grain lead SWC with a large meplat.

The mainest thing is that you can hold your cool and get multiple hits if necessary. :)

Sjsp?

What about semi-jacketed soft point in the 158 grain range? In terms of fairly large animals...ferral hogs, etc...would they be more effect or less effective? Guess I was thinking penetration over expansion hoping that the impact at close range...15 yards...would do the trick.

Thanks

I carry 180g SJSP in my 4" 357 expressly for hogs, but I have seen a really big cat on the land I frequent. I still carry a rifle most of the time (or shotgun depending on the season).
