1st pistol purchase

Hey everybody, I am currently awaiting word on my pistol permit application and as long as everything goes well should be receiving my permit soon. I am looking for a revolver mainly for hunting. Let me start off by saying this will not be the first time I have handled or fired a pistol. I grew up shooting my grandfathers ruger .357, then while in the Usmc I was issued both a beretta 9mm. I also owned a springfield xd .40 for about a year before moving back to NY. What I am looking for is a revolver with at least a 6 in barrel in .357, 44, or 45lc that can be had for around 600.00. Other calibers are options as well as long as they can drop a deer with correct bullet placement. Any ideas guys,

For a quality revolver in any of those calibers for $600, you are probably looking at used. Then you need to decide if you prefer single action or double. After that it is just a matter of preference as per looks, cost and how it feels in your hand. Unless you reload, I would stick with either .357 or .44 as legitimate hunting ammo for .45 Colt is harder to find and expensive. I hunt deer with .357, .44 and .460. The .357s I consider as "bow range" guns. The .44s are better for 50 to 80 yards, whereas the .460 shines for ranges farther than that.

Thanks for the input buck, after talking to the wife yesterday I got my budget opened up quite a bit. I have been reading up on both the ruger redhawk in .44 rem mag and the smith and wesson model 586 in .357. Kinda leaning towards the smith and wesson because something about it speaks to me.lol any others comparable to these two I should be looking at.

How 'bout the best of both? A S&W 29/629 in .44mag.

BTW, do you want to mount optics? In the early 80s, I believe, S&W started pre-drilling & tapping the top straps for a scope mount.

You should be able to find a Ruger Blackhawk for $600.00. I agree on a .44 magnum if you don't reload, and a .44 or .45 Colt if you do. Either way, you will save a ton of money if you do reload.

great reccomendation mr Borland, I stopped in my lgs today and was able to look at and hold a redhawk and a smith and wesson 629 in 44 mag. I have to tell you I liked the redhawk but the 629 with a 5in barrel balanced well and felt great in my hands. Long story short I left but only after putting money down on the 629. As long as everything works out I will bring it home soon.
