Im not trying to down on the side rail, but If I could make a suggestion;

You should try out the TWS dogleg rail. Its the lowest rail I know of for a rear mounted optic, which is essential for a good cheek weld. I good cheek weld is very important for getting on target quick and making a steadier shot. Even with the TWS rail, youll need a cheek riser for most US optics since they are made to co-witness the AR-15 irons. But the TWS rail makes it easier to find a riser that works for you.

Great looking rifle btw.

Magpul AFG

So how do you like that AFG? At first it looked a little gimmicky to me. Now that I look at it and think about it it seems like it would be a pretty comfortable angle.

Magpul AFG

I haven shot it yet. But just holding it, it is a very comfy angle. Much more so than a Virt Grip in my opinion. I bought 2 more of the AFG2's for my AR's as well.

Looks great brother.

Yung gunr---I though AFG were gimmicky at first as well; then I tried one out... They are the only foregrips I use now. For me, they help me pull the rifle into my shoulder without having as much side to side movement that I had with regular vertical foregrips. That said, it's a preference issue no doubt.

plouffedaddy - First of all, Thank you for your service!

I currently have optics for everything but if I get a failure i'm pretty sure the Lucid is my next red dot.

For the longest time I was an AK guy. I loved (still love) them. I started to build them from parts kits and flat receivers after a while.

One of the things I learned early on is that those dust cover optics mounts outright stink! They aren't secure - by nature of how the dust cover attaches to the receiver they move! Stick a rail on the cover and stick some optics on it and now you've given the cover more mass which means more inertia - and more motion during shooting.

If you haven't shot it yet you'll find out really quickly that your POI changes - sometimes from shot to shot. While the changes are small and if you're shooting at a human size target at 25 yds its not an issue you could see as much as 6" difference in POI at between 50 to 100yds.

You should stick with the side rail mount you had and put a cheek riser pad on to raise your cheek weld to be in line with the scope. The rail on the side of the receiver isn't just there for looks. Its what the Russian military STILL uses for mounting optics on their AK based rifles and its the ONLY recommended method. That mounting system is rock solid if used properly and the great thing is you can remove the whole setup by sliding the whole mount off and when you put it back on you still retain zero on your optics.

Trust me on this I spent over a thousand rounds and several hours of frustration before I realized what was going on with those dust cover mounts. Same goes for the SKS albeit the SKS dust covers are thicker and fit more tightly to the gun.
