1st Blackie

Well, I got my first bear today. It's a little 130lb S. Oregon Blackie. I took the shot at 15yds as she ran straight at me. An electronic distressed fawn call got her running in like I had free beer. I hope my future bear harvests are this exciting!

wow, didnt know you can shoot a bear coming after you like that lol. Here in cali, i know some cities that have houses up in the mountain areas that prohibits people from shooting bears even if their life is endangered.

THANKS GUYS!

azsix... I used my 6.5x257 Arisaka Sporter. 140gr Nosler Partition/43gr H4831SC.

haiyter... No offense to you Kalians, but that's one of the reasons I don't live there, your lawmakers are practically brain-dead. (my opinion...once again, not trying to offend anyone)

hd... LOL! No kidding! Who know such a little bear could look so BIG! :D

G- Nice!

Terribly embarrased, as I didn't realize the season opened already. Guess I need to read more closely.

Were you on the coast? We bow hunt elk on the coast and every year, I make these big plans to spend a couple of days on bear, but the hunt for elk always seems to take all my hunting days.

G - I fully understand the lack of specifics, that is why I only mentioned "coast" as where we hunt elk...

Good hunting!

Awesome, I just bought a 6.5x55 Swede. I can't wait to start handloading. I'm planning on trying to call some bear this year here in AZ.

Are you going to have it mounted or make a rug?

gedenke, that is not your opinion. I'm pretty sure that is my opinion. You can use it, though.;)

Oh, and nice bear, too.

GUYS, FEEL FREE TO POST SOME OF YOUR BEAR SUCCESS PICS FROM THIS YEAR!

Scorch... something tells me we're not alone on that one.

azsix... As far as a rug goes, probably not, it's a bit small. And the summer coat, while there's no bald spots, is a little thin. I'm hoping to get a good thick springer someday that I can put some money into making a nice rug. I will, however, definately bleach the scull, since she's a young bear, her teeth are in pretty good shape. (no missing chunks or bad rotting)

G -

How did you set up? I have kicked around the idea of calling bear and cats, but did not want one coming in on my blind side and having me for dinner.

I know a couple of big clear-cuts that seem like prime real estate (cut borders deep brushy creek)

Dave... My advice, though I'm far from an expert, firstly would be to go with a buddy. The clear-cuts sound like a good start. My bear came up a deep ravine to the old skid road I was on. Sit-kneel-whatever facing opposite directions (see more/cover each other's back), maybe with some concealment, and call every couple of minutes. Set up for 30-40 minutes then move on.

But if you do go by yourself, of course, be careful. Cover you a**. In other words, put your back against something big enough to make a cat or bear go around (like a brush pile or big tree), keep your head on a swivel and your ears open. I would stay away from over-hanging rocks, but that's just me.

I'm sure there's a few here that are more experienced and knowledgeable than me that could give you more/better pointers, but I think that's a whole other thread! Either way, have fun, good luck and let us know how it goes!

G - thanks for the advice.

As a habit born of being as paranoid about mountain lions (probably excessively paranoid) I always avoid overhanging rocks....

Good hunting!

Nice bear. Remember to took (on edit cook not took) that baby real good now cause bears tend to have trichinosis.
