Good deal or no?

There is one at the Gun Show here locally and I haven't quite decided if I want it or not. If it's a good deal I may just go there tomorrow and pick it up. Either that or get him to go down a bit.

$199 is not a bad deal for a hi cap Makarov. I had one for awhile. I paid $90 for it in '98. I even managed to find 4 extra mags for it. Sam Andrews made a custom IWB holster, and bought a case of hornady HP for it. I loved it. I traded it though for a NIB Bulgarian SA93 Ak.

The little Makarov's are exellent weapons.

If it's not there don't sweat it. The hi-cap mags don't feed as well as the traditional single stack Maks. If it is gone, buy a Bulgarian Mak for $100 and spend the rest on some Pearce rubber grips and a bunch of ammo and be happy. CDNN and SOG both have the Bulgie's.

I've got a bulgie already, but I'm looking at trying to start a collection. My Bulgarian has excellent bluing, a deep dark blue job. The Russian can't touch the finish on my Bulgie.

I checked over at SOG and other places, but it seems like everyone is out of $100 Bulgarian Maks.

They had one at the gun store but it was a bit different than the Bulgarian I own. This one had a circle 10, but it also had what looked to be like Russian crylic writing on the slide. Plus there was a Ser# on the slide and frame. Both numbers were 1863.

There was also another stamp that looked like it had been "X"ed out. Perhaps this was one of the first ones that came out and was rebuilt.

Actually, the misconception that the double-stack mags don't feed as well as the single-stack mags is due to the cheap aftermarket mags that used to be found with many of the hi-cap Russian Maks. The unreliable feeding problem is solved by using factory Russian mags (distinguished by their gray zinc-phosphate coating, as opposed to the gloss black sheet metal of the aftermarket mags). These used to be difficult to find, but not any longer.

As for the price, it's not bad. It seems the price on most Maks is going up --- the $100 Bulgarian milsurp Maks are virtually nowhere to be found.

And as for Bulgarian Maks being produced in Russia, most evidence points to Bulgaria receiving the manufacturing machinery from East Germany -- EG production was prevalent in the 1960s, while Bulgarian milsurp production took place in the 70s.

Take care. Marko
