1974 Security Six

Hey guys,

Just got a Security Six - pawn shop find. Lots of holster shine, but hardly a turn line and really tight lockup. The classic "carried a million, shot a few". Pretty grips. What value would y'all put on it?

I really like it, like it a lot and I'd be a buyer if (when!) I came across one in similar condition at a gun show.

But that's the rub --
I chase guns like that. Frankly, it's got a lot of exterior wear. It's a (formerly) common gun that went for a very affordable price and they made many of them.

From what I see in the pictures, I would be quite surprised to see a seller at a gun show get even a penny more than $400 for that one, and I don't think I would go that high if I were the buyer.

But regional pricing does exist and I know that many folks see them quite often while I seem to rarely spot them, even though I'm looking for 'em.

I'd be a happy buyer if the price started with a "3" and there was no tax piled on the purchase. ;)

Good guns. I've owned a couple of them over the years.

My local dealer would have it tagged around $400.00 give or take.

What'd YOU pay for it. That's what it's really worth.

Thank you gentlemen

Yeah, I'm happy with it. Did I mention that the chambers and barrel are spotless? Yeah... They're spotless. Where else could a man find a "mechanically new" .357 with all of that sexy wear on it. I love Pawn Shop surfing!

10 yards, 6 shots

Two hand hold, gut pressed against the bench... Before adjusting the sight, so there's some Kentucky windage going on.

It was my first gun, purchased in 1973. Thousands of rounds later and many more additions to my stable, it's still my favorite.

:D Hahahaha, we've all done this 'position' :p:D

We simply must come up with an official name for this shooting position!
Weaver has his stance.
That Isosceles guy is famous for his work in math, astronomy and handgun shooting.

Are we gonna call this position The Filthy Harry ?! :D

I had one back in high school, around 1980. Mine was the same as yours but it was the fixed sight version, a little harder to find. Mine ended up with the same wear as yours, I carried it so much in the Illinois woods. Sometimes regret selling it, replaced it years later with a 4" GP100-----big improvement. Those Security's seem to sell around here 3-400 on the high end.

Good revolver. Not ver common where I live. Probably go around $500 - $550 here. However 357 magnum revolvers seem to bring higher prices. Even the second hand ones. Which is one big reason that I buy 38 Specials revolvers now.

I bought one of those in MO a couple of years ago, it is stainless, in very good shape and I paid $500. I thought it was too much but I owed the guy for past favors. Mine is 4" too. I think it is the best revolver that I ever owned, too bad they quit making them.

had one

I had one of those, the grips are unique, and you will be hard pressed to find anything that will fit on that frame except the factory service grip shown. My understanding was that Ruger then modified the frame in later production, , and the grip people got on board and began to make options. I kept the skimpy service grips on mine, and looked for options and never found any,....back in the day.

Mine would shoot, and the SA trigger pull was just out of this world fantastic. DA only acceptable. Pet load was 158 LSWC to 1000 fps. Carried that old revolver a long time as a personal duty gun, and as a woods roamer.....then as the agency went to autos.....traded the "Six" for a Blackhawk. Had to have a hogleg.

I've been using the "Filthy Harry" method of bench shooting for years now and have the belly burns(concrete bench) to prove it! Glad to have a name! It lends some class to my technique!:D

Back in the '70s, when I bought my then used Security Six, I put some Pachmyr grips on it. They worked very well back then and I still have them, although I've recently put the factory wood back on it.

Here are a couple of photos of mine with the Pachmyr grips.
