So a few nights ago a friends grandfather handed me this gun stating he didnt want it any more, i didnt know what it was so i went online and looked it up and it seems like i now own a relic! i was just wondering everyones thoughts on this gun bc it is a deluxe edition and mostly untouched it looks brand new i was wondering if i should even buy ammo to shoot it or keep it as a collectors item. Any other information on this gun is greatly appreciated as the local gun store only offered me 400 for it but he did state that he offer half of value.

The savage 99 is turning into a collectors item and is fetching higher prices every year. They were made for quite a few years and are not a rare find, but people just are not selling them now like they were 10 hrs ago. My father in law has collected them for years and has about 10 of them now. The majority of the 99's that you will find are either in a 250 savage, 300 savage, 243, or 308. They were by far the the most popular. Some calibers are much harder to find as they were few produced in that caliber and fetch a much higher price. The two calibers that I can think of off the top of my head are the 284 and the 358. If it's in excellent shape, I would not think about selling it. The value is only going to go up. I live in TX and the 99's were not near as popular down here as they were up north. The 99's go for a lot more down here as a result. As far as using the gun, if it was unfired, I wouldn't touch it. If not, I wouldn't worry about shooting the gun, i just wouldn't want to use it as an everyday hunting rifle that gets nicked and dinged up. There are several people on here that are much more knowledgeable about them than I am and will probably chime in.

I have a .358 99 F (early model) and a monte carlo stock sounds wrong to me. Does the gun have a detachable magazine? Either it is a newer model or someone replaced the stock.

It's a newer model.

I forget the exact model designation (it's NOT, however, an M model, that was a receiver marking).

The .358 was offered in several different models.

Shouldn't it say on the barrel what series it is? My .358 Savage 99 does.

Mine is a Savage 99A Brush Gun, and you would have to offer me far more than $1200 to pry it from my hands. That gun shop was trying to steal from you. Even the stock if not original the rifle is worth more than $400 as a shooter just because of the chambering.

if anyone can tell me how to post pictures it definitely is not the detachable model there is a letter M on the level boss and a letter m next to the model 99 on the reciever on top of the gun i was told the letter m on the top stands for montecarlo meaning a deluxe model

beauty

The straight gripped 99A carbine is the classic 99 to me..........and yours is in .358!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a beaut..................

Nice rifle

Mine is stamped Model 99 F (Featherweight) on the right side of the chamber area. I don't have a digital camera and would not know how to use it anyway. My rifle is the first model out in .358 WIN. The nice one posted earlier is the second time they made them. Mine has a pistol grip stock, checkering, and the short fore end. They had problems with stocks cracking and started to make them like the previously pictured model which had beefier stocks. 1961 seems a little early for a monte carlo stock, although I have picked some up over the years with Herters monte carlo replacement stocks. I may have the time frame screwed up, I keep forgetting how long ago they stopped making 99's. Either way, I find that .358 really hard on deer when it hits.

im just guessing through research that the gun is a 1961 i was told that if u look on the level boss that u will see some numbers that and a letter and that letter represents the year the gun was made. mine says (10M) and apparently M=1961 as per another forum on this website

sold the gun about a few weeks ago to a local guy who collects these rifles he gave me 1800 after some steep haggling i guess he had to have it and i built my self a brand new shiney stag arms left handed AR15 with a fancy LE only Red Dot

You did good at $1800. I have my late Father-in-Law's 99 Featherweight in .358. It won't be going anywhere as it's eventually destined to be my sons. Great rifles from days gone by.

I'll never understand how one would choose an AR over a hard to get Savage 99. You can get an AR anywhere and anytime but a nice 99 is hard to find.
