I have a 1939 300 savage and up under kinda where the serial number is under the trigger gaurd there is a q stamped on it I was just wondering what it was there for or what kind of model it is?

The q is a date code.

As for what model, is it a lever action, a break action, a single shot, or a bolt action? Otherwise your question is like asking "I saw a red car yesterday. What kind was it?"

If your .300 Savage happens to be a Model 99 lever action, if the forend's removed, the model letter(s) should be stamped into the front face of the receiver, on either side of the magazine spool's axle.

AFAIK, Savage didn't start stamping Letter Date Codes on receiver bottoms until 1949, and stopped in 1970.

IMO, The "q" is most likely an inspection mark.
