Very Nice!!

I've currently got a bad case of "gotta haves" for a 1917. Headed to a show Saturday with a pocket full of dollars. Hope I can find one as nice...

Joe,

It may be a trick of the light, but that gun appears to have been heavily buffed and reblued with a modern tank blue. Original finish on the S&W 1917 was a dull blue. So if looking for a good one, try for as much original finish as possible. Of course, if you want to "chop and channel" it then get a functional but doggy looking one and have at it. But they are getting salty in good shape and very collectible, so I hate to see a good one "customized".

A little more 1917 eye candy.

Good eye Jim. It has been buffed and refinished. There are a couple of areas where this is more pronounced, but in general the lettering is crisp and deep. Mechanically it seems pretty sound and the bore is bright with decent rifling. I'm prejudiced for sure, but I would consider this a "good" one - not collectible perhaps, but great looking and a good shooter. The double action pull needs work but the SA is very light and crisp. I paid about a third of what S&W is asking for the re-productions so I don't think I got hurt too badly. Oh, and I got a period leather flap holster and belt (cavalry version that hangs down and swivels) along with it.

I have my own version of the S&W 1917

I have posted this befour but what the hey I'm proud of it. Its a sweet shooter, started life as a brazialian contract gun with little finish left. mechanicly sound through. had the action smoothed, and blued, springs replaced, orange ramp in front sight, and green parkerized the rest of the gun. finished it off with a set of Camo pachmayr presation grips(remember them?) below is a picture.

How much should a used 1917 in good condition go for? There is one for sale locally in one of the Nickel papers, but they want $450 for it which seems high.

Very nice, Atticus. Where did you get it?

Is this one of the "boys from Brazil"? I think that 6 got approved in `91 or `92. Brought in a couple of containers if I remember.

Makarov, 1917's aren't cheap in good condition. That's about what I've seen them going for around here. Mine had some cosmetic problems and someone had filed on the front sitght, but it was perfect mechanically. I paid less than $300 for it, but it's been a few years. By the way, it will put all 6 shots through one hole at 10-15 yds. (Or it would before my eyes got old.)
Try one and I think you'll be really impressed.

Makarov

I gotta second the comments on the 1917. I have both the Colt and S&W 1917s as well as a few of the Brazilians and they are just plain a joy to shoot. Check it out using the suggestions for checking a used revolver and if it passes, jump on it. Frankly, short of some of the PC handguns I don't think you can get much better.

If you still feel $450.00 is too high, go price one of the Heritage S&W 1917's and the real 1917 will look downright cheap.

KSFreeman: Thanks. I picked this one up at a local shop for $350 (which included a few accessories as well). It is US Army issue. I'm sorry I don't have the abiltity to post a decent picture at present because it looks much better in person. The lettering on the bottom of the grip, and the top and bottom of the barrel, look like new. The S&W DA .45 markings on the barrel are buffed out a little and there are buff marks just north of the grip on the left side. The grips are like new, as is the bore and cylinders. I'm happy with it, and that's what matters I guess.

BTW: The medals and bayo were my grandfathers from WWI. The Medals are Canadian. I'm not sure which Grandfather the bayo came from. One served in the US Army and one in the Canadian. I'm guessing it came off a Springfield but I'm not sure.
