1911R1 vs Springfield Mil-Spec?

Hello everyone. About to buy my first 1911 and I got it narrowed down to two specific guns. Either the Remington 1911R1 or the Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec model. The Springfield is about $100 cheaper and I am looking at Stainless models. Which one would you choose and why?

Springfields seem to be hard to beat.
Good service if needed, and well made guns with forged frames and slides.
And they sponsor shooters and support matches.

Last I heard, Springfields were forged. Not sure about the R1s. Given the known vs. the unknown, I would choose the Springfield.

R1 now uses forged frames as well as slides and are great shooting pistols. Either choice shouls make the OP smile.

After further research and the views from my fellow Firing Line members, i am thinking SA Mil spec. But for right now, I'm working on getting a police trade in Sig. CHEAP! Thanks everyone ;)

Between only those two, I would take the Springfield. However, if I were shopping for a new 1911 neither of those brands would even be on my starting list.

RickB I'm saying the Mil spec is about $100 cheaper than the R1

The R1 carry, with forged frame, is priced about $300 more than the Mil-Spec, if gunbroker starting prices are any indication.

Comparing stainless 1911A1 style versions, the Remington R1S is slightly cheaper than the Springfield Mil-Spec but both are very reasonable in the $650-675 range.

Either is a good choice but I went with the R1S because I really like its pre-1911A1 flat mainspring housing matched with the 1911A1 short trigger and the dovetailed front sight instead of arched MSH and pinned front sight in the Springfield. The R1S also is nicely dehorned and has a tight slide to frame fit and very tight barrel to slide fit. The R1S has a cast frame, the Springfield forged. Otherwise they have similar features and lots of modern touches like beveled magazine wells, polished feed ramps, stainless steel barrel, lowered scalloped ejection port, passive LCI, two magazines.

The R1S unfortunately has the Series '80 firing pin block while the Springfield has a built in lock in the MSH. At least both can be removed.

Remington vs Springfield

Not the same thing, but ask any R51 owner what they think about Remington,
then pray and hope that they won't treat R1 owner the same way.

It's good to have choices. I have an older, 90's Edition Springer (pre Mil-Spec) and an R1S. If I was forced to choose between the two, I'd go with the R1S. Both are good pistols, but my particular R1S had an edge in reliability over my 90's Edition (wich needed some work). I also shoot the Remington slightly better (that's not a condemnation of the SA). Fortunately, I don't have to choose between the two.:)
