1911A1 loaded disassembly?

Started to disassemble my new 1911A1 and stopped short when the guide rod didn't have the keeper pin hole as per the instruction book (I actually went back and read it to see if I was missing something).

This isn't my first 1911, I've owned a Gold Cup and two Gov't 1911's and currently have a Kimber Compact. None of the Colt's had the guide rod, but Kimber has the same keeper pin design and it was easy to disassemble/reassemble.

Without the keeper pin, it would seem that the only way to disassemble would be to physically hold the slide back and remove the slide stop, then remove the entire slide assembly, but reassembly would be tricky. Am I missing something?

riverdog,

You've got the right idea, but rather than taking the slide assembly all the way off, just let it move forward enough that the barrel bushing clears the guide rod. Then the bushing can be rotated and disasembly can proceed normally from there.

That's the way I do mine all the time.

Good Luck...

Joe
