1911A1 has a last shot hold-open. right?

Sorry for the dumb question, but this is my first 1911-type gun. The beater 1911A1 I just bought doesn't lock the slide back when racking on an empty mag. I just want to make sure it is malfuntioning b4 I ask for help and look really stupid. Thanks for answering.

The problem could be that the follower in the mag isn't pushing up the slide stop. Try another mag. It could also be your slide stop is the problem. I had to replace mine when I first got my kimber because it wouldn't always lock open. Replaced it and the problem went away.

Yup.

It's probably either a bad mag (weak spring not pushing the slide stop up) or a broken/gunked up (really dirty) slide stop.

I've also seen in used 1911's that someone will replace the slide stop with an aftermarket one that doesn't quite fit on that gun. A little modification with the ol' dremmel tool and it will fit, but it won't quite work right.

Does the slide stop work manualy? If so, try a fresh mag.

Whatever's wrong, it's probably an easy fix. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys. I am assuming I can still take the gun to the range and just rack the slide on reloads. Any problems with that? Thanks again for the replies.

No problem with that at all... and no worries either.

Good luck...

Feel dumb now. Just noticed that the previous owner cut out just enough follower to not press the slide lock. I only got one mag with the gun, so I guess I have an even better reason to go mag-shopping now than to just add more! :)
Thanks again guys.

A replacement follower should fix that mag as well. They are sold separately for just such problems.

Glad you got it all figured out...
