1911

I have a few questions please.

1) Who makes the best magazines for a 1911, and

2) What would be some causes for a Colt 1911 to have failures to eject? I've never been able to find any rhyme or reason for it. Is it possible to be related to a poorer quality magazine?

Thanks.

Most 1911 fans agree on Wilson magazines as "the best".

Failures to eject are unlikely to be caused by the magazine. The most likely culprits are improper extractor tension and/or a lose or incorrectly shaped ejector.

Les Baer mags here.

Had a bunch of McCormick mags for training but they wore out over the course of a couple of years--loading, unloading. Now use Metalform mags for training.

Wilson Combat's 47 series mags are the absolute best 1911 mags on the market. But I wouldn't buy them from Wilson for two different reasons. First off, you can save a few bucks by looking around. There's plenty of stocking dealers that offer these mags a little cheaper than Wilson's suggested retail price. Secondly, WC has a way of backordering stuff without your knowledge. That means that you'll be expecting delivery in just a few days but the package never arrives. When you call to verify your order, they tell you that one (or all) of the items are on backorder. I have had this happen twice and it has made me a little gunshy from ordering anything from 'em. I can understand backorder situations but stealth backordering makes me a tad bit hot under the collar.

As for ejection problems, it probably isn't mag related. I'd look at a couple of other things. Check your extractor tension. Either tension your present extractor following these instructions or buy a Wilson Bulletproof extractor when you order your mags (which you will need to tension also). In my experience, those Bulletproof extractors are awesome. When you have your pistol stripped down for tuning your extractor, take a look at the ejector and make sure it isn't bent, deformed, or worn out. Also, grab hold of it and see if it rocks back and forth.

Standard warning: Be sure to unload the gun and remove all ammo from the room before attempting any of the above. You will note that the extractor tuning instructions in the above link call for the use of a live cartridge. Pay no attention to that. Make up a dummy cartridge for that part of the procedure (or have someone with a reloading press make one). They are simple and cheap to make. Live ammo has NO place at the workbench!

Cheers.

How many rounds thru the gun???

some guys shoot a lot but don't change out 'wear" components.

Equivalent to brakes or wipers on a car.

May be restated from above, but)

Worn extractor.
Dirty chamber or other working parts.
If it's been shot a lot, change out the springs, including the slide spring. Everything has to 'balance" to work right.

When you clean your gun do you remove the firing pin and extractor? The extractor hole in the breechface collects gunk like a magnet. One word--Q-tips!

Wilson (Echo?) and MetalForm (round top follower) mags have worked well for me. Advise already given on your ejection problem is spot on.

E-Gads!

I feel like a cad!

Like I just got back from a 2 day vacation and discovered I left the cat locked in the garage without food or water!

I have to admit that in the 18 ys I've owned my Colt, I've never taken the extractor or firing pin out. I did now, though, and CHUNKS of stuff came out! It also looks like the extractor is worn out, so I see an order for some Wilson stuff in my future. Thanks, guys .

Any recomendations on where to order to from to avoid the stealth backorder?

You can avoid the stealth backorder by cornering the fellow you speak with at WC assure you that the parts are in fact, in stock. Also, avoid ordering from Wilson via the 'net. Stick with the phone.

Some other sources for Wilson mags are...

www.pt-partners.com
www.brownells.com
www.e-gunparts.com
www.gunbroker.com

There's many other online sources for Wilson mags, to include patrolling the sales sections on these forums. You can also check with your local dealer. He can get them from his distributor and apply a slight markup and you may still come out a little cheaper than ordering from WC. That's how I did it. My dealer ordered a whole slew of 'em when a few of us local guys started asking about getting some. He sells 47Ds all day long for twenty five bucks a copy, new in wrapper.

But if you DO end up ordering from WC, make sure you get the person you speak with to verify that everything is in stock and ready to ship.

I hope your cat is okay. :)
