1911 Springfield Armory TRP

Hey guys. I want a stainless 1911 45 but cant afford Les baers, Wilson Combat etc. Looking at a very nice SA TRP without the rail. Had one of these many years ago sold it. I understand SA has been up and down some since I've had mine. Are these good guns now? I plan to carry EDC and will probably shoot maybe 1000 rds per year. Love the smooth finish and feel of this gun. What say you.
 
Not aware of Springfield having been up and down, so wouldn't be concerned about when a given gun was made.
15 years ago, the TRP was generally thought to be the best value in "production custom" 1911s.
They are no longer built on components from Brazil, made in the USA, if that's important.
 
I know the old Loaded models (like mine) had the frames made in Brazil. I'm not sure the TRP series ever did. But as Rick said, I've never heard of "ups and downs" with SA 1911 production quality.

I might point you towards a Dan Wesson Valor for similar money. I've shot SA 1911s with 20 lines per inch checkering and it was rough on my hands. DW uses 25 lpi and my hands felt better after shooting a Valor, V-bob and Specialist.

Just my 2 cents.
 
If you have never heard of SA Inc having QC problems then it's obvious you are not familiar with the M1a rifles and the horrible Garand they produced around the year 2000
 
My advice is to find your 1911 pistolsmith before you buy your pistol. Ask if he has a used gun for you, or what he prefers to work on.

Look around at your shooting club or local range for a used gun from an old guy that will go out and run a box of ammo through what he wants to sell.

Since I can drive to the Springfield shop, I would not hesitate to but another Springfield (my competition gun was on a Springfield National Match frame. I sold it, not shooting seriously any longer but it was awesome.j but then, I am more likely to bite the bullet and spend the $2k on a Rock River (not island) semi custom. (Honestly, I’m more likely to spend that 2k on a skeet gun but I digress.)
 
Give a call to Clark Custom Guns and ask this question .
I notice your location is Deep South and in this neck of the woods the Clark Boy's advice would be my choice for something I was goint to bet my life on ...
I would have them build it or at least buy what make they recommend and tune it .
I mean ... how much is your life worth .
With Clark Custom Guns in your back yard ... it's a no brainer .
I believe Jim Clarks Grandsons are running the shop ...
They know a thing or two about 1911's .

As far as I know, when Springfield Armory had their arrangement with Imbel ALL the slides and frames were made in Brazil. The lower-end guns were then fully assembled in Brazil and were the ones marked "Made in Brazil." For the higher-end models, the slides and frames were shipped to the U.S. and were assembled by Springfield Armory. Although the parts were Brazilian, enough of the work was done in the U.S. that they could be marked "Made in USA."
 
I have a bunch of 1911 fro Springfield without issues what so ever. My most recent purchase was a TRP long slide in 10mm before the pandemic. Still shoots great and has not tested positive for the Covid.
 
To piggyback on what AB said, at some point, the frames whose serial numbers began with NM were the ones that were completed and finished in the US- or even stated to have been "made" in the US. The frames without the NM in the serial number were made, completed, finished, the whole nine yards in Brazil.
 
Without evidence . . . I think Springfield "made" pistols in the U.S., as necessary, to fill production requirements. I handled a half-dozen Mil-Specs with NM numbers and no import markings, 15 years ago, even though Mil-Specs were supposedly built by IMBEL and shipped to Springfield as complete pistols.
 
Thanks guys for all comments. I pulled the trigger on a stainless TRP without rail. Fit, finish ,trigger is excellent. Haven't fired it yet. Film at eleven.
